I was looking around the house and came across a copy of GMP's promotional video, it has the Cobra, the King Cobra, the Cricket, the Cobra Jet Ranger, the Shuttle and the Flybarless Legend. It even includes the learning to fly instruction.....WOW what nostalgia! I really enjoyed watching Bob Gorham do the flight demo's. He could really fly!!!!

I once saw him cut a pancake in half while landing an auto....he started out so high, you could barely see the helicopter. What ever happened to him?

Speaking of GMP, there is a place in my area that used to be a GMP dealer, I was out picking up some X-Cell parts and he told me he still has GMP parts.....I don't know what parts, but if anyone is interested PM me and I'll get back to you with the phone #

Kandace, I have the same video. I was at a funfly in 1985 or 86, and at that time Robert Gorham was one of the "top dogs" for sure. We all watched in amazement as he hovered nose in, and kissed the nose of the canopy, then proceded to hover over his head, and tweak the high speed needle! By today's standards, not really the thing to do. " Here, hold ma sign, I don't wanna git any blood on it" . He also flew a Cricket, better than most flew helis.

COMPETITOR: ROBERT GORHAM

I know this is an old thread but it just never got completed and the main question was never answered in my eyes.. So here is a little more info. Maybe the owners / Moderators of this site know where to get the answers..Just a thought.

I was at the 1ST WORLD Helicopter Championships in 1985.
It was also dubbed Chopper Champs & was held in London, Ontario, Canada. I still have the Official Program sitting right here..
Robert Gorham was there (along with all the major world wide competitors of the time)& I talked with him for quite a while as well.
As your selves since the demise of GMP I've wondered where Robert ended up and if he was still flying..
With the amount of awards he won at competitions you would have expected him to have shown up some where. Wouldn't you..
Any one Know any more..???

Robert is no longer involved in the hobby. His father has asked to please respect Robert's privacy and not try to track him down.

I, too would love to interview Robert and see him fly once again. He was a champion back when Curtis was still in diapers!

In the meantime, here is some interesting reading...see the video about halfway down on this page.

"Robert is no longer involved in the hobby. His father has asked to please respect Robert's privacy and not ("try to track him down."

What??? Whats the big mystery? Is Robert in a Tibetan monastery or stuck in a Bolivian prison for stealing a goat? What gives? Robert was a pivotal person in this hobby for many years and inspired countless people by his flying, myself included. Like me I am sure there are hordes of people who would be very interested to hear what he is up to or what he thinks about the current state of helis. Even if he thinks all this stuff is for kids and we are a bunch of wankers. At least you would understand why the disappearing act. Last I heard he was involved with jet skis and didn't want anything to do with models. That was probably 15yrs ago though. I also remember several people saying that he was an arrogant A..hole, only met him once he seemed decent enough. He may have had an ego but he was the man back in that day. I bet he could even make a few bucks from a mag interview. I would pay to read that.

Robert Gorham

John Gorham has helped me on developing the GMP website, and in the course of our conversations, I raised the issue of Robert and why nobody hears from him any more.

Robert is still around, and in fact I read somewhere that Jason Krause recently flew with him for fun, so he still “gives it a whirl” every now and again apparently.

In today's world of computers, it's fairly simple to track someone down and find out where they live and their phone number. However, I am sure that if Robert wanted to reach out to “the hobby” and make his presence known, all he needs to do is pick up a mouse and click. In fact, for all we know, he could be reading this discussion right now!

Maybe Robert is our "Elvis"!!

Chopper champs 85

Well there we go..
A little more info..
I'm glad to hear that Robert gives it ago now and then, sorta keeping his hand in. That is great..
I was not trying to invade his privacy by any means.. That is the last thing on my mind..
He was so inspiring to me as we video taped and interviewed him back in 1985. I still remember laying on the ground at his feet (where a lot us should be) . Our company was the only one to go out and tape the competion.
Interviewed the Godfather of R/C heli's as well, as he was there from Germany.
I've been looking around the house for the video, it is an hour long..
I just haven't found it yet.. Reason- we moved and like so many things it remains hidden packed away some where..

Thanks all for the info And I wish nothing but the Best For Robert Gorham..

Hi all,

Did anyone else go to the promotional debut put on by RG showcasing the Legend at Morgan Hill, CA? He did a Q&A thing afterwards.
(this was a BIG event back then)!

Back then there was no internet, at least not like today.

That being said, I would drive (2 hrs) just about every Sat and go to helicopter world to buy spares/fuel/kits w/e. There were so few peeps flying helis that if you wanted to see someone fly, you had to buy a video.

That being said. RG had a few vids out..I was so impressed with his flying technique, that I still do hovering piro circles.

This video has a interview with the US team. Interesting listening to them talk about their machines and set-ups. RG's comment about the (Japanese helis)still cracks me up
Tom Dooley
Tim Schoonard
Curtis Youngblood
Robert Gorham

Think there is a interview with the Japanese Team as well as the British. Been thinking about having it converted to DVD but seems like a hassle. Plus id be devastated if anything happened to it. I still watch it a cpl times a year after all these years

We also have some homemade vids from some Merced and Bakersfield funflys. Seems like '89 to early 90's. Rob is flying TSK's in our vids...

BTW, I would absolutely love to somehow get a copy of the GMP promotional tape..hint hint

Replaying that tape is a much bigger risk to its health than converting it. The conversion requires only one more pass of the tape and anyone doing such work will use a VCR known to not eat tapes.

I need to start converting my old VHS tapes to DVD too. I have reliable machines here (Sony) and maybe you'd give the conversion process a second thought.

I know someone with the GMP tape and we talked a little about doing the tape-to-disc conversion, but the subject's been forgotten, right JC?

*Edit*: I think RC Video Magazine is John Beach's company. He still has archives of his tapes and maybe some are now in DVD format. I'll ask him about this, unless he reads this first.
