I was reading another tread on Run Ryder and a guy was trashing the Falcon........He says the following:

Quote
I have seen Falcons come apart in the air. How about the mismachined counter gear shaft that if not told about it causes the counter pinion gear to slip and fail. I Know for a fact that I'm not the only one its happened to.

So what you people says about this..........I have hear a lot of people complanining about the mismachined counter gear but thats was all.
Nobody has mention that the pinnion will slip and fail resulting on lossing tail

Counter gear shaft

Isaac,

That fellow obviously doesn't know his rectum (a$$) from his scrotum (Balls). He is probably a field rep for a competitor. Do you not think that if this was true or as dangerous an issue as he claims that it would have been discussed here?

The "Mismachining" he is referring too is the flat spot on the top of the shaft to which the pinion gear is attached. As is, if assembled as per the instructions there will be a bit of vertical play in the system. But this will not cause " a heli to explode in flight". The only thing that will cause a heli to explode in flight under normal usage (A blade folding back into the boom when one has bled off too much RPM in an aerobatic auto with the blades set too loosely in the grips does not qualify here) is excessive "woof and poof" as I have experienced on Raptors and Shuttles (I understand it can even be a problem on the Sceado) or by throwing a mainblade in flight. This I have seen happen on an X-Cell, a Raptor, a GPH and many years ago on one of my Shuttles. On my Shuttle and on the Raptor I am sure it was because we had not glued the plastic blade roots too the blades. In the cases of the X-Cell and GPH it was because the first blade grips that came with them were too weak. MinAir and Hirobo subsequently manufactured stronger ones and exchanged them for any who had the weaker units.

The "loose" vertical fit will ultimately lead to wear in the shaft in the area where the shaft rides in the inner race of the bearing. But this takes a relatively long time. The bearings may well wear before the shaft so standard reqular maintenance will prevent it, and the shaft is not very expensive (I had over 400 flights on one before changing it out).

When building, if one elongates the flat spot with a file or adds a 5x 7mm shim, he will be able to eliminate all vertical play and extend the life of the shaft indefinitely.

It is this kind of fear mongering that really picks my a$$. I have extensive experience with all kinds of makes and models over the past 15 plus years and all heli's can be improved. I have found that the Century units need the least "tweaking" to get right for a perfectionist like myself.

What else can I say ?? Syclic Hit the nail right on the head.

I will add that this is something an experienced Helicopter builder would have caught.

When I built my first Falcon I spent the better part of 2 month’s putting her together I had my dial indicator and calipers in hand. Basically I was looking for flaws. I do this with all helicopters I assemble for the first time. I tore apart that falcon so many times I could put it back to together in my sleep.

I could not find a single flaw that warranted immediate attention .... Although I will say that Century at times has issues with Quality control they have always dealt with them in a timely manner.

In fact just today I was assembling a new falcon for a Kid who is just learning. I noticed a bit more play in the mainmast bearings then I cared for. So I promptly took the helicopter to the local Hobby shop that it was purchased at. There So-called Helicopter expert Looked at it and said “so what do you expect it’s a cheap Helicopter”. (He flys a fury) I said well that’s your opinion and I think you are wrong. So I asked him to get me a new main mast and a set of bearing so I can mic them. After checking the new main mast I realized that the New shaft was about .0015 thicker then the one in the heli I asked if he would warranty the problem and exchange the main mast. Just As I thought No luck. (They will never see another dime of my money) When I got home I called Helicopter World and talked to Brian when I explained what I found he told me no problem I’ll drop one in the mail to you today..

So I don’t understand all the comments about how helicopter worlds Customer service sucks..

I here that,,, my LHS just plane ol sucks !!,,, the owner tells the club that club members get 10% off,,, then, when a member goes in to buy a plane kit (and he will not sell heli !!) or something els like a motor he says Oooh I can't sell that for 10% off, and then the owner gets mad when he get to the field and sees that you bought the same kit from someone els, he just can't seem to get it !!,,,,,

So when I told Century Wednesday that my new 12 day old OS 46 had a scored piston and I had to send it in to Great Planes, well lets just say that they helped me out big time so I could get back in the on Friday !!

Century is great !!
