I hate to say this. But, I recently just experienced a WOOF or seriously out of track condition on my Hawk SE.

This is how it happened. I was playing with my Eclipse radio in order to try to keep the headspeed from slowing down while having extreme cyclic inputs. So I had a bunch of Cyclic to throttle mixing.

It works, heli doesn't bog down as much doing stationary flips and rolls. But, after the tenth flip or so, the throttle arm broke off (it was probably binding).

And the headspeed went THROUGH THE ROOF! (the throttle was stuck on full)

Anyways, I was able to land the thing w/out problem, but the blades were spinning really really fast.

I thought I let the heli sit there until it ran out of gas. After about 2 minutes of full throttle at -2 degrees pitch (normal mode), it suddenly started woofing on the ground.

I quickly played around with the collective until it went away. Now, being smarter, I switched it back to idle-up, and gave it -8, and had the heli push towards the ground.

With the blades properly loaded, the woof problem went away, and the fuel was used up without further incident, except for the fact that no one else was able to fly for the duration, as I landed on the runway!!!

Other than checking the Spindles for damage from the woof I wouldn't worry about it, the "sitting" on the ground at full "song" is unnatural

Hey Jimmy,

When did this happen? Must have been earlier this week because I haven't been out at the field.

Did you set up you Throttle Hold? That may have helped in bring the engine to an idle so that you sould safely approach the heli and shut it down.

See ya at the field. Hopefully the other airplane flyers weren't too scared of our type of flying machines

Mud in my face

Sorry about that, Jimmy. I took another look at your post and noticed that you mentioned that the throttle linkage broke off...........how in blue blazes can someone activate the Throttle Hold when the linkage is gone? Duh???!!!! I've got to learn to read more into the post before I say anything.

Well, I hope everything was okay with the heli.

On Sunday, Frank Galindez's heli had the woof syndrome. Problem with that was that I was flying his heli inverted when it went into the situation. Luck thing was that I got her rightside up and landed her without further incident.

I had my throttle arm pop off the ball (the ball somehow gat marred and wore out the link) but I was fortunate (reletively speaking) to have the throttle close and kill the motor. Ended up being my first, and only, successful emergency auto.

As for a possible cause of your throttle arm break, I'd quess that when you started mixing the swash to throttle yo probably drove the throttle servo past its mechanical limits which caused the linkage to break. This is, of course, provided that the OS 32 has a carb barrel stop built in like the OS50. If it doesn't then disregard this post.

Totally amazing

Yeah Ray,

It happened on Wednesday. And Yeah Ray, I DID try the throttle hold, throttle kill, trims, to no avail.

Everyone is amazed, including myself, that I broke off the metal arm of the throttle linkage!!! Instead of popping off the ball link!!!

I knew there was some binding after adding in the cyclic to throttle mixing. But I needed the mixing, so I thought I try it out anyways.

Less than 3 minutes into the flight, and the thing breaks!!!

So, for that day, I was 2 for 2. Stuck on full throttle doing aerobatics on the Hawk SE, and Stuck on full throttle doing aerobatics on the Kaos (no, the Kaos is an airplane).

I got the throttle linkage replaced with an extra one that came with my Falcon SE kit!! Woo hoo!

Anyways, I flew the heli again today, and she flew fine, until I flew her into the ground. And John took pictures. We will be sharing pictures with you if you come out to the field on Sunday.

If you're off on Friday, we will be repairing the Shack Friday morning.

On a final note, I think what caused the WOOF was a combination of

a) seriously overspeeding the head
b) ground resonance
c) close to 0 degrees of pitch.

Well, maybe you can install a Servo Saver. RC Cars use a servo saver on the steering servo so I am pretty sure you can do the same on your throttle servo. This way when you are forcing the servo trow this will override the force.

Hey Jimmy,

How bad was the crash? Well, I guess I can check it out on Sunday. Sorry...........I won't be able to help out on Friday.........got to work that day.
