Well the first of my X-400's came in today. I grabbed one of the pre-assembled kits and ive been putting electronics in it today during spare moments when work is slow and all i have to say is, "WOW!".

Even a poor factory assembly job flies better than a carefully built Trex. This heli is gonna be a winner. If i built it myself from the kit i think it would fly even better but this is more than acceptable.

I have a few complaints but they are hardly worth mentioning after i got my first good flight on it. More later....

Very stable hover. You will need positive expo to make it a bit more lively. Looks like it will want a nice powerful motor. The quality is excellent on 99% of the kit.

Im quite impressed and excited about this kit. In fact im going back to tune the setup some more.

Cheers,
Anni

Hmm...yes the canopy is gonna be a problem. What did they do....design it first? sheez. Its not even close!

I've been looking at this helicopter, looks like its going to be a winner. What is the story about the canopy? Ugly?

maybe give me some ideas on the how to.s

thanks hellijunky

The canopy will not fit if using HS56 using the 55's work well. You might lose about 2 degrees of negative pitch because there is no clearance at the top of canopy for the pitch lever. If anything use the T-Rex canopy it might malke a difference.

Fly Hard… Crash Harder… Have Fun!!

affirmative. they are the same canopy. Im using a futaba 3107 in the aileron position. Im thinking to mount it from underneath instead of from the top and see if that might make a difference.

Is it any better than an eCCPM converted Trex? If so...how and why would be of interest to me. I don't want to swap over to a new heli that looks the same, is the same size, uses same electronics, and is basically a clone unless there is a big advantage. Does it climb better? Faster roll rate? Longer flight times? I like the idea of no slop but I will convert to eccpm with any heli this size anyway. I wish someone would convince me as I always like getting new boxes in the mail...but to give up all my spares and start anew for another trex size heli(that look just like my trex) I need to be impressed by something that matters...my trex hovers hands off for longer than I'm comfortable with....who wants to hover anyway?

Are the materials of the x400 better?

that's a toss up the plastics do seem a lot softer on the x400 but there's definitely a whole lot less slop versus the trex right out of the box. The chassis and headblock mechanics are definitely in the x400's favor. I snapped my head during my initial setup on the heli, nice part is that the parts are relatively cheap like the trex just gotta wait for the parts to begin filtering into the US. However, shipping from rc-mushrooms in HK is pretty reasonable and actually faster then certain online shops locaated in the US even when you do express mail....go figure.

the x-400 is smaller than the t-rex. Im not sure exactly where precisely yet but im working on it. I know so farthat the stabilizer fins are Zoom/Shogun size, the swashplate also shogun size, frame is same as well as many of the parts, but there are many things smaller. Main gear for example, TRdisc size also, Its hard for me to pinpoint the differences at the moment (the fact that im coming back from the pub might have something to do with that) but it seems to me as some kind of mix between the zoom and TREX.

One thing, ALL or virtually all slop is gone in the x-400. this thing flys out of the box and factory pre-assembled almost as precise as my trex eCCPM conversions. There is a tiny bit of slop in the elevator assembly only which can be dealt with fairly easily. Im not entirely convinced to do any major jump shipping from align to ark yet but if i had to recdcomend a heli for a newbie the ark is the way to go.

I think what i will end up flying is some kind of hybrid between the trex and ark as there are definite things i like better about both and many of these things are interchangeable.

I will stop now becasue im drunk and fear that i am making no sense..... more tomorrow....

cheers,
jd

BTW, is it just me or is this thing smaller.... if i put it next to my trex's it doesnt really seem smaller but holding it by itself.... something isnt right.....it seems smaller somewhere......

X400's newbie's first heli comments and questions

I just got my x400 assembled from rc-experts in Hong Kong. I am enjoying learning and working on it considering the complications that are to be expected. I have many questions? I'll move to another area if this is not appropriate. But hopefully others interested in the X400 might find my beginner observations interesting.

- The timing belt came loose in the front after 10 mins of attempting to hover because the nylon nut that holds the Drive Pulley came out. I only learned of that nylon nut's existence after the fact. I also lost the washer and Drive Pulley washer. (Page 10,Step 1, Parts 1,2 and 3) Anyway, I ordered those 3 parts and pre ordered the ARK CCPM X-400 Conversion kit from microhelico.com in UK. (more on that latter) I just wanted to know why this happened and how I can prevent it. I don't think I had the belt too tight or loose. Probably bad assembly?

Another problem: I was getting too much vibration because the stabilizer bar came installed 1 inch off center. After I centered it I think it got better. I hope they didn't do it in purpose for some technical reason beyond me. I wonder if there's anything else to watch out for before I fly again.

- What else can I tweak? After reading the limited info about post installation in the manual, all I should do is inspect the linkage by eyesight (which looks leveled everywhere) and balance the main rotors (done). I guess that I shouldn't have to adjust the length of linkage rods for tweaking. I don't find anything else tweakable. However, I constantly have to do a lot of trimming in the radio control. Sometimes 3 or 4 clicks. The rotor feels very loose compared to the real flight G3. It doesn't come back to exactly the same place by itself. One of the control linkages that hooks up to a servo (forgot which one) slides in the servo arm instead of staying in the middle. Should I try to bend the rod wire to fix this?

I think that I should have more power/lift. With the lithium battery it takes off the ground at close to full throttle. With the extra lipo battery, at about 3/4. I didn't change the settings in the radio yet. Is this normal for a new heli before tweaking the radio control? The servo arms move in range proportional to the sticks in the control.

The canopy touches and prevents the "Elevator level Swash rods" from moving freely. Should I cut the plastic in the canopy? That's going to be a big ugly hole.

Lubrication or dry? Does the heli need lubrication (grease or oil) in any of the external parts? I would rather leave it clean and not attract dirt with exposed lubrication. What should I do?

I got a free upgrade from a Futaba 6 channel radio to a Sanwa RD8000 8 channel radio. Was this a good thing? It feels like a toy. The battery compartment feels loose, but I hope that the electronics and range is as good as the Futaba. Is Sanwa a good brand?

Should I extend the antenna in the heli or can I leave it tied up?

In the RealFlight G3 simulator, which also has poor documentation but is also a great product, I flip a flight mode switch and the rotor speed remains constant so that I can go upside down. I guess that due to the collective pitch feature the air is pushed up when the throttle stick goes down. Anyway, can my heli do this in the current stock condition?
The new CCPM swatch plate I ordered has 3 arms instead of 4 arms. I guess that I'll be changing the SWH setting in the radio control. Do I have to change the throttle curve points in one of the modes to a constant setting at all points too? I want to flight upside down and do all the cool stuff I have been doing in the simulator for dozens of hours instead of working.

Wow, how did I come up with all of this. Ooops.

Anyway, thanks for your help.

I think it looks smaller because of the narrowness of the frame. Giving it a very slim look. I put my rex next to the x400 aligning them at the tail shaft and they're the same up to the main shaft. The front end of the x400 is shorter.
