Crazy tail grab bro!

Thanks man. Since I can't finish out with an auto on these electrics, I like to end my flights with something more dramatic than simply landing

Looks like your HB2 flys about as well as mine do..j

My expectations of the HB2 were surpassed. Its an amazing heli for the $150 RTR I paid for it. BTW, I'm flying mine bone-stock, no electronics upgraded, and I don't seem to be having any problems with yo-yoing.

Anyway, this isn't an HB2 thread, so sorry for getting off-topic.

Depending on how much money you want to spend and what kind of equipment you already have go for the kit and plug in your own electronics

Really, the primary lure of the #35 is the price. I won't be getting it with the intention of putting much money in upgrades into it. I wouldn't mind buying some Hitech micros, but that would be about it. I am however, willing to spend the extra money on a brushless motor for it as I don't care for brushed motors' diminishing power.

I don't need a crazy 3D heli as I do have a Raptor 50 which fills that role nicely, but I would like a micro heli with a bit more aerobatic capability than my HB2.

I'd love to see a video of someone doing some aerobatics with their #35 if anyone knows of any?

Sorry, I'm not that far along yet I'll try to get a few videos in next time I fly in the gym, but that might be a while. Maybe a few climbouts could give you an idea of the power or lack thereof. Personally I think the servos may be a tad slow for 3D, but again - I am still far from anything even remotely 3D.

There is a brushless #35 RTF (with a Walkera brushless ESC and motor I think) sold out there, just in case you didn't find that out already.

I'm pretty sure the overall flying characteristics are more or less what the Shogun can do, after all that's what Walkera cloned the #35 from.

No control over speed of motor #35 Z400

Im not too sure as to whether anyone else has had this problem,

First of all, when I first got my Walkera #35, it worked sweet without any problems, out of the box it didnt even really need much adjusting.
My problem is that about after 10 mins of its first initial flight, I lost control of the speed controller.. by this i mean.. the left stick control doesnt work the speed control anymore and the motor just runs at full. This occured during in the middle of its first flight... While it was running!!.

Everything else works fine, its just the speed control.. By the way.. this is with the flight mode switch flicked up.. 3D mode off of course.
Last night, I took the motor out of the helicopter but still plugged in so that when i plug the battery in the motor doesnt run full bore straight away and send the rotors at a shocking full pace at start, I had a play around with some of the settings but had no luck trying to regain proportional speed control with the left stick control.

So if anyone knows what the deal is with this.. please drop me a note

Does anybody know if its just a setting that has just changed itself?

I doubt it's a setting... theoretically it could be that the "3D Switch" is broken... if you want to, you could check that by opening the TX and checking the wiring. Another alternative is that one of the switches on the back is reversed - the default setting is (from 1 to 10, off being switch to "left" and on being "right"): off, off, off, on, on, off, off, on, on, off

If that fails it's probably the RX or ESC thats fried - the electronics are not the best, I'm afraid. You didn't mention if you had the brushless setup or a regular brushed setup. With the brushless, the "Actyator" is the ESC. With the brushed, the ESC is in the RX.

Help with NEW Z400 setup please :)

Hi Team,

Got my Z400 yesterday, came with brushless mtr, controller and carbon kit.

Still have standard white blades on at moment.

Checked everything n it all looked good so headed into the garage with a 1/2 charged 1900mAH battery to run it up n see what was what.

Well she didn't wanta take off at just over 1/2 throttle so unlocked the dip switch 8 and turned the Pitch knob on controller round to between 1 and 2 oclock n up she lifted at around 1/3 throttle.

Seemed dam stready to say the least! ... was able to hover quite happerly at around 6-12" off ground with out any odd movements or major drifting.

I do have a couple of questions for those in the know to help out please.

1) when they say adjust pitch to 3-4deg for hover flying where do I do that? do I need to somehow adjust angle of blades or just turn the pitch knob?

2) what does the other knob do? ... PZT I think it is.

3) When I landed a couple of times and carried it back to the middle of the floor it wouldn't throttle up with throttle stick, I had to go full bore then to 0 a couple of times before it wanted to start again, sometimes I unplugged and reset. Is that just the gyro reseting? or due to having a low battery to start with?

4) how/where does the battery go ... haha ... my rc-expert batt's are skinny as, how do you mount them?

Must say even though it was just a wee play it ran well and felt really stable n nice to fly, heaps gruntier and stable than my CH4 so I'm quite happy with it at the moment and looking forward to having these things answered in heading outside where there is room to play

Thanks

Muz

(REPLY) (1)To adjust the pitch you use that dial on the upper right side I usually leave it about 1/4 turn from left or (-o) this seems to be perfect for hovering. (reply 2) The other knob does nothing its just there) (reply 3) You may want to check to see if all the gears are meshing and the motor is not loose check all the screws and servos to make sure they are not binding, also run a full battery next time, if this does not fix it you may want to have them replace the transmitter. (Reply 4) The battery slides in the front under the receiver I use rubber bands to hold it in tight. (Hope this helps ) Sincerely,
Al

Hi leadsinga

There are two ways to adjust the pitch:
1. You can adjust the pushrods to the blades
2. Adjust it the way you did (with the PZT/PLT knobs)

One knob adjusts the pitch range, the other the pitch at center stick (only in "Normal" mode I believe). To see what I mean, unplug the motor and then play with the knobs. Beware that if you give it too much positive base pitch you'll have trouble holding the tail steady in "Normal" flight mode - the motor RPM will be too low and the tail won't have enough authority to counteract torque. If you need to adjust the pitch range beyond what the knobs can do, change the collective servo arm length (the one under the main gear).

The motor spin up problem could be a few things:
- The gear mesh might be too tight somewhere (main rotor or tail rotor gears)
- Any of the bearings is bad and binds
- The battery was too low and the BEC got triggered (you mentioned flying with half full battery - so that would be my guess)
- The motor needs some running in (although I don't know that brushless motors need any)

jknoell,

where can i buy the crown gear? Will the shogun gear fit?
thanks,

Which gear?

Do you mean the main gear or the motor pinion? The main gear you can get just about anywhere the pinion you would have to check with the Asain suppliers.

Good luck

HeliNewbie:

you can get the crown gear (the tail drive input gear) at any place which has Zoom/Zap/Shogun parts - they're identical. The bevelled output gear are the same as the ones sold as "upgrade parts" for the Zoom/Zap/Shogun heli.

n2lry:

No need to get the pinion gear at asian suppliers. They are standard pinion gears. It's easier to just buy the motor with gear though, unless you want to change the gear ratio.

So far I think that most mechanical parts are interchangeable between the Shogun and the #35. There are a few bits and pieces where I think #35 parts are better (bevelled tail gear for example, or the steel main shaft), but there are upgrade parts for the Shogun which fit just as well.

Electronics on the other hand... they work, but they're... below standard.

jknoell,

Have you replaced the stock crown gear with the Shogun crown gear(#165188)? HOw's the performance?

When I pulled the stock crown gear off, I noticed the hole on the stock crown gear is a simi-circle while the hole on the Shogun crown gear is hexagon.

I wonder if I need to use the Shogun tail shaft in order to use Shogun crown gear?

Please let me know.

Thanks

I don't remember offhand where I got the gear from (I'm thinking either DeeTee Enterprises or HeliHobby), but it had the same round entry with one flat side. Alternatively you can always get genuine parts cheap from HobbyJapan or Hobby E-Store.

There are, btw, also after market crown gears which happen to have an allen wrench screw to tighten it to the shaft.

Edit: Forgot to mention... be careful with the gear mesh. Too tight and the motor bogs down. Too loose and you'll strip it fast.

Response to ESC

Thanks for the previous reply jknoell, I havent been at the computer lately to respond to your message, but its brushed motor and the ESC board is located inside the receiver unit on the heli.

Im quite new to this so I have a Q to ask anyone if they can help me =D .. I see that there are ESC's that you can buy out there. Does this mean (even tho the walkera #35 has an ESC onboard the receiver unit).. that I could buy an ESC for my dragonfly #35 and plug it onto the receiver where it says "Actiyator (Throttle)" and plug the motor onto the ESC.. and its ready to go??

Another thing..I notice that when I plugged a servo into the "Actiyator (Throttle)" point on the receiver, the servo would move according to the left stick proportion control on my transmitter (pushing stick upUp and Down).
I tried this to see if the servo would work in proportion control or flick all the way to positive.. and the reason I tried this is because the speed controller onboard the receiver is obviously failing due to the main motor reaching its top speed when battery is plugged in.. regardless of where the throttle stick is (In normal flight mode) and I thought (theoretically speaking in my opinion) that this proves that its the receivers ESC and not a problem with the transmitter.
Not too good for the Cogs i see when the motor tries to hit full speed as soon as the battery is plugged in.. due to the failing ESC .
Ive now got the motor off the heli so its not running on anything when it fires up.
And for the stripped cog thats on the end of the tail rotor drive rod that runs directly off the motor, a very hot knife with a good V on it and about 20 mins, I had it shaped and running like brand new again .

Once again im a n00bie in this game ;-), so if anyone has any Idea's or had any problems such as the ESC just failing for no reason also when its not overheating in mid flight! Please let me know if you know what the cause could have been.

Cheers Guys

jknoell,

I installed the Shogun crown gear (hex) and tail shaft on my #35. The beveled gear of the tail shaft is slightly larger than the original one. It can accommodate with the tail housing gear by adjusting the gear meshing.

So far, I still haven't been able to resolve the CG problem. My #35 always flies backward.

CG problem.

Just wondering if you tried moving the battery pack more forward. I have the larger 2200mah li-po and i move it forward to correct the cg. You can try this or they also make an aftermarket carbon fiber battery tray extender.

Hope this helps.

With the stock NiMH battery, the #35 can only hover 1 foot off the ground. Is this normal? Or do I have something bogging down the motor?

So far the other problem I've encountered is that, when the on board battery drops below 11V, the tx would lose radio contact with the helicopter.

Btw, update: I got my new flybar and feathering shaft today, along with a spare brushed motor - all were shogun parts bought from DeeTee. They worked perfectly, same size as the original Walkera parts.

Up and running again - yay. Except: Batteries empty... the one major disadvantage of electrics

jknoell,
Just curious, how long would a 400 brushed motor last? Are you on lipo or stock battery?
