Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Falcon 50 clutch very grabby

My Falcon 50 clutch will engage even at low idle. It drives me crazy. My drivetrain is stock except for an aluminum fan. Also running an OS 50. Has anyone experienced this problem? Is there a quick fix out there other than turning down the clutch lining.

BTW I am glad to find a forum for helis only. very cool.

Have you check your lining???? Do you glue it with Epoxy???
Maybe was not glued right and the lining is come off from the bell.

Clutch engagement

Well I guess there is always a first for everything. I have never seen this problem on the Falcon before, unless it had experienced a "run-away" or was just worn out (takes a lot of running to do that. So if you do not mind, please give us a little more information.

Is this set up new?

Have you experienced a "run-away" (engine started or ran at full throttle for any length of time without the blades being allowed to turn (e.g starting with throttle open, in idle up or having crashed an the battery disconnected, the throttle will go wide open but the head will not be able to turn.)

If not, have you replaced the clutch liner recently?

If not, how many gallons of fuel have you burned while using this clutch?

Is your clutch an insecure female type?

thanks for all the interest. Here is a little more info. As I said everything on the heli is stock except for the fan. I have two gallons of fuel through the engine. One gallon during engine break-in while the engine was out of the heli and one gallon flying. I am not good enough for 3D yet but I get the heli around the field with circuits. No crashes or a run away engine yet. Of course the clutch bell already had the lining installed from Century as it came with the kit.

Sorry, one more thing. Phil. Could you explain to me how a run away engine could cause this problem. Just trying to reason it out, but if the clutch shoe were moving and the clutch bell were not, wouldn't that wear away the clutch lining making it less "grabby"? Honestly I don't know but if you have more info on this I would like to hear it. thanks again.

A runaway or hot start can easily overheat the clutch shoes. This has the ability to compromise the tempering or hardening of the clutch shoes. If this happens there is a strong possibility that the clutch shoes will not return to the resting position. Basically the clutch shoes lose their springiness.

They’re also stands a possibility that the clutch liner was not properly installed at the factory.

Clearance

I think Oldfart and Blazen have a good point. You could have a clutch that is not tempered correctly causing it to engage at a low idle. Or......

If you have a tight clutch/liner clearance then you may experience the same issue. If you do have the engine out try to measure the clearance with a dial caliper and let us know the results.

Otherwise, consider it a slight inconvienence and just keep buring fuel till it loosens up. If after 3 gallons it still does not loosen up then the problem is more than likely the clutch itself and may need to be sent back to Century.

The clutch on my Hawk IV has always engaged at idle. I never thought it was a problem. When I got my R60, which doesn't engage until about 1/4 throttle, I thought it must be defective! Anyway, it's never been a problem with the Hawk clutch (4 or 5 gallons so far). It stops when I use the hand-brake method, thats all I expect out of it.

Hi,

I had the same problem with a Hawk III, where the clutch seemingly always engaged at low idle.

I changed out both the clutch shoes and clutch bell, and the problem stayed the same.

Since I changed out both the clutch shoes and clutch bell, now I'm thinking maybe it's the bearings that are grabbing. My bearings were kind of notchy when compared to another Falcon I just built. But it wasn't so unsmooth that I felt it was bad. Kind of weird. I think the Bearings fit in too tightly into the clutch bell, causing it to be not as smooth as it could be.

I have a HawkSE who's clutch won't engage until close to half throttle.
