Stolen? Missing Helis or Equip > Home Contents Insurance

Hi Guys,
A quick heads up for you and an update on the burglary I had in mid February.
Well the insurance paid out and I got a cheque to replace all my heli stuff, thought all was well until this morning when I recieved a letter from my Lovely Insurance Company:-

Quote -
I have been in further communications with ****** Insurance ( the underwriters) As the policy administrators we act on their instructions and they have indicated that we will no longer be able to provide cover for your collection of motorised model helicopters as they should be excluded from your policy. Therefore any future claims for these items will not be covered.

This is contrary to the terms and conditions of the policy, but as they are entitled to spit the dummy out of the pram as and when they want ! what can I do.

Check your household Contents Insurance....... I consider myself lucky that the company paid out initially but what of the future...... these things weren't stolen from a garage or a shed, they were taken from my living room !!! where any individual item (not specified) is covered for up to £5000 !!!

Has anyone had similar experiences ? what companies can we use that we can rely on ??
Thanks for reading

Could it be a case of declaring certain things. I know with Direct Line I had to declare my Mountain bike, worth £2000 at the time. Have not done the same for my helis, but I think I will give them a call.

As for them changing the terms I would suggest a letter to them stating you are taking it to the appropriate trading standards authority. Or perhaps get the likes of Which? magazine to help.

Does the BMFA insurance we have help? I haven't looked at that for possible theft insurance.

Unfortunately ......
I am a Consumer Advisor for aforesaid Trading Standards Service........
I know that they can and do, do this, even if it's wrong or refuse to insure me at the end of the term.....
hindsight being a good thing .... I took it at the brokers word that what I asked for was what I got ...........but not in writing. Like you said, maybe a good thing to declare individual items.....
I shall be having a word with The Financial Ombudsman Service tho regarding the change in terms, as it does state in the policy that any item under the value of £5000 is covered and does not have to be declared !!!!

BMFA ,,,,,I'm not sure about but I don't think so as it is only 3rd party liability

Can I have some money please

Just offering food for thought.

Last week I stopped and asked my State Farm agent about coverage and my heli's. He infiormed me that they are covered by my homeowners insurance anywhere, anytime they are "in my possesion".

He did say, for example, if they were in my truck, and I was in a wreck, homeowners covered it, BUT it could effect my homeowners rate or cause termination of the policy if I had too many claims.

Here is where it gets sweet!

He then suggested a personal property policy for them. At this point, I can already see my wallet going THIN! Darn to my supprise, he quoted me $10,000 coverage for anything other than crash damage for $194.66 per year!

For $194.66 a year seems to be on heck of a policy. They could be stole, my neighbor could crash into my garage, I could get rear ended, you name it, they are covered!

.

Don't come off the throttle untill you see your GOD!

Blake as far as getting rear ended if you have full coverage on your auto it will cover it, (though if you get rear ended and the bloke that hit you HAS insurance that will cover it as well) I was rear ended and my brand spanking new R60 and all my gear was in the back of my toyota celica (tight fit but it did fit) I was hit by a 79 monte carlo....put the trunk into the back seat, crushed just about everything....now mind you this was not my first R60, so I had a boat load of spare parts as well as a older (6 months) 9c and my current flight box, so not everything was brand new, when I contacted the persons insurance about it, the adjuster told me to work up a invoice of replacement costs (yes replacement I even told him I didnt have some of the reciepts to the gear as I had them for awhile) and his response was..."it dosent matter, I want the price you are going to have to pay from the store to replace what you had." I got a check for the total payment about a week later...

Coops, looks like its time to change providers! I also checked with my state farm agent and all my stuff is covered under my umbrella policy though they are noted on the policy as well....

Well I can't say I have got much further as I have had bigger fish to fry...... birth of child number 3 and a change of career.
But I am pursuing a complaint through my broker and will definately not be using this company again.
Steve Gerrard has however been speaking to Royal Sun Alliance and another company who I can't remember the name of !!! sorry but they will provide full cover !!!
Royal Sun Alliance have provided the BMFA with insurance so I feel there may be an inroad there and if I suppose we all put in a request to the BMFA who may be able to then who knows? possibly a discounted premium for members as there are so many of us.
If any one can can shed any more light on this subject
(surely there must be a member who works in the insurance game?)

then please pitch in !!!

glad you got sorted rotorpsyco
