Just a quick update.

We have changed the name of the simulator from RCFS to Collective to more clearly define our heli roots.

We have moved the project from sourceforge to berlios, so for those of you that were following our activities at sourceforge, head over here:

collective.berlios.de

or if you want the project page:

https://developer.berlios.de/projects/collective/

Some new things since the last update:

Collective now runs on Windows
We have added PPM support for Windows, so you can now use your radio to control the simulator.
We have added joystick support for Windows, so you can use a joystick controller if you want to.
Better physics (although this is still undergoing work)
Some smoke, so that you can at least see your engine running.

Hi hvrbyte

Thanks for the update, and great to hear about the developments, as
always i can't wait to try the finished sim, i check the forum every day for the latest to see what is happening.

All the best

Some more updates on what we've been doing and where we are going..

It feels like there isnt much major progress right now, but that is because most of the major things are in place for a beta release. What we're doing right now is more or less cleaning up things and removing the shortcuts I took earlier in the project.

As far as I see now, the major things that need fixing is:
Implementation of rigid body dynamics, so we can land in a normal way, bump into objects, crash into fences and all those things we normally do at the field..
Finishing up of the GUI, which means to add the extra functionality needed to do just about anything from within the sim, insted of editing configuration files.

If you're interested in seeing how the GUI will turn out, here's how it looks right now:
http://194.150.212.52/sim/GUI.png
(Dont laugh, I know my 10X doesnt normally looks like that)
I think that will be an interface most of us will feel at home with.

My head has already started churning on how we will take the sim to the next level, and I assure you, it'll definitly leave all commerical simulators feeling somewhat "lacking" when it comes to both graphics and physics.

I've ordered an upgrade to broadband , getting ready for the beta download.

Broadband?

The executable is 62KB for Macintosh.. The textures are probably around two or three megs when they're zipped.. Shouldnt be much of a stretch for anyone.

Estimated time for beta: "When it's ready"

Seriously. It all depends on how much hassle the last stretch of the physics I want to have included is.. It also depends on how much work my day-job will require of me, and a ton of other factors.
We'll release a beta when we have trouble finding the bugs ourselves.

With my current connection , three megs could take nearly half an hour , you don't expect me to wait that long to try a new sim do you ?

Slow,

Thanks for the update, the sim sounds like a true winner, as for how long it will take, all i have to say is, "All good things come to those that wait"

All the best

Hi,
From what I can see you guys are making great progress. I'd love to get involved, I'm a professional software developer and I need a good open source project to play with.
Unfortunately I can't seem to connect to any of the berlios.de sites. Is the site just down temporarily or something?

Thanks,
-Merit

Yep, it seems like berlios is temporarily down. Should come back up pretty soon.

Whats your fields of expertice when it comes to software development?

Yeah, I can get there now. Just got lucky it was down when I first read your thread I guess :P

I work on transit control systems for railroads and subways. We do near-real time systems in C and C++ on various unix flavors mostly, though we are moving to a lot more windows applications now and will probably be doing some java and .net (c# maybe) in the near future.

I mostly work on back-end server processing, with some gui (X mostly) and database stuff thrown in for good measure.

I'm really interested in working on a physics model, it's something I've always thought would be fun. I have practicaly no physics background (beyond basic college courses) though, so it'd all be learning.

Voltage levels of JR PPM Signal?

I just came across this thread and would like to ask a "sort of" related question that some of the hardware guys might know.

What's the voltage levels of a JR transmitter PPM signal? Does it depend on the model of the transmitter or are they all TTL, or 0-Vbatt swings?

Thanks
Lewis

This is GREAT!!!! Keep up the good work - sadly I donīt know anything about programming, but I canīt wait to try this out. Didnīt realise until now that 9x had a jack connection. Am I gonna need TS jack or TRS jack? Do I need resistans in between?

Last but not least: Thank you for this. The screenshot looks incredible... alot better than the alphasoftware thing. No offence - and the best thing - itīs free... Iīd be happy to make a little donation though.

Yup, it's still active.

We've been busy evaluating different libraries to help us focus on the core part of the simulation, and not spend time reinvent the wheel for everything.

It's not dead, even though it looks like nothing is happening at the moment.

Being a rigid mac user I have to say that this is the best thing that has ever happend since the release of OS X. Is the use of PPM signal via the audio port somethings you came up with, or is it common in other sims? I am so exited itīs hard to behave normal!

I just had to share my exitement once more!!

oh man...

You can pull the code from collective.berlios.de using subversion

Windows and OS X builds works and is controllable, Linux compiles but the control interfaces are not working at the moment.

Just a quick question how come everytime i go to the project web site,
https://developer.berlios.de/projects/collective/
i don't see a thing on the sim, no screen shots, no description and no files, just curious if there is anything there at all to sample and get a feel for the sim.
