Is it possible to get a decent fade from spray cans? I have tried to practice on a piece of cardboard but it is hard to tell if it will work well on a canopy. Have any of you done this?

I've tried spray cans, airbrush and touch-up gun for fades without success. Decided that it was my lack of talent rather than the method of paint delivery.

As I always say when someone asks me about golf, "my handicap is my ability". Seems to be spray painting also.

I do it on my Rappy but im no pro and it wont win awards but the heli is easier to see now. The can method produces too much overspray you have no control over that. My method is to spray at an angle facing away from the previous color so as to minimize overspray, then after its clearcoated it feels fairly smooth. It dosent look bad and its a heck of a lot cheaper than a $100 canopy that could be destroyed in a sec. Its seen dirt more than once so im glad I did the paint on it. The fins are the easiest part to match. You can use about any paint ya want to as long as you clear coat it. Im running 20% nitro and it dosent affect any of my paint jobs so far.

The trick with spraycan fades is to spray on the second color while the first is still wet. This causes both paints to 'meld' into each other giving a smooth transition. Fast drying laquers are not ideal that reason. Also test the spray patterns of the cans beforehand to know the size and shape of the paint stream.
Cardboard will dry the paint as it is sprayed. Try it on a 2 liter bottle or similar sheet of plastic.

Another 'trick'

One other helpful hint using spray cans for a fade is to heat the can in hot water prior to spraying. This increases the pressure inside the can, producing a much finer spray pattern than when the can is at room temperature. Instead of coming out in small splats, it comes out in a mist.

Hope that helps.

Yet another one!

I like the one Bill said but be very careful heating up those cans of spray paint. They still can explode!
They do have different noozles out there that spray different patterns.
I reading this story on graffiti artist that paint some of the bulids in the cities. They where explaining that they used different noozles on the spray cans to do different things!

Dodging..

Howdy!!!
To make spray can fades look better you can use a trick I call "dodging".. It is similar to to dodging when printing a photograph that you want to have a little lighter in some areas.. It requires practice.
Get a piece of carboard, aluminum, whatever, and hold it away from and directly above the line where you want the fade to be.. This "dodger" is covering up the area you have already painted, and establishing a straight line for the fade. The further away from the canopy you hold the "dodger", the wider and "fuzzier" your fade.. The closer you hold it, the more of a precise line you have.. TRY IT!!!
I paint all my canopies with flourescent rustoleom over rustoleom white primer and finish with 3 coats of Monokote clear.. It is acceptable in appearance, highly visilble, and CHEAP!!!
