I think the starter cup has the final gear of the reduction drive built in, so it can't be removed.

I had one a while back. There are a few disadvantages.
The reduction gear is part of the starter cup. So it can't be removed and there is no shaft to hard mount a startshaft to. The cup is also bigger than the std Sullivan / H9 /Tower starter so the rubber based startshafts don't fit either. You can wrap tape around those and press fit them in though. My Kavan burnt up - as in smoke pouring out of it - when I tried to start my OS91. Upon disassemply the metal gears in the reduction box were actually bent. It did work ok on a 60 size engine. Oh and because the starter doesn't have as much inertia as the heavy regular ones expect a bigger kick back when turning the engine over.
In all ok for 60 and smaller engines.

I have the kavan starter, and it works good on my 30 size Venture, but is not any good with my Freya w/YS80. For my YS I purchased the magnum starter (torque) it works unbelievably well, I havent bogged it yet. It cost 29.99 at my LHS, and it works great, its the same size as the kavan starter but way better. I dont think alot of people are familiar with magnum for starters, but to me this is what they are known for now. Get one you wont be disappointed, I use the straight shaft from Hirobo with it. daz...

daz,

Tell me more about the magnum starter. Who makes it? Do you know where I can get one? On the internet?
