Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Filter between muffler and tank pressure line

I read somewhere that you should fit a filter between the muffler and the tank to stop any gunk being drawn up into the tank. Is this really necessary ? and if so should the filter mesh be steel or would the gases be cool enough not to melt a nylon mesh filter ? Any opinion please.

I use a steel mesh type, not essential but cheap insurance.
