Back in 94, when a friend and I were into 3d, he'd just got his first 60. Or rather I should say his first xl, cause that's how we thought back then. Anyways, he was doing low level roll flips, and struck the ground. The heli came down on its side, beating the blades to death. The skid or something got stuck on the turf, but the motor was still running full chat. the flybar had bent back, i think the paddle were still on.

Now here's where it gets funny, the model was spinning round on the ground, the bottom of the skid anchored to the turf, and the head spinning around it, with the beating flybar (and what was left of the blades) cutting a nice symetrical deep V in the grass to form a perfect circle. It must have gone round half a dozen times, by which time everyone at the field was looking on.

Then suddenly the skid released - and if your saw the film alien where it first escapes from the blokes stomach and runs off quickly along the floor you can picture what happened next - the heli shot off down the flight line, lying on its side, with the beating rotor head driving it along. it must have gone 40 meters before the engine went bang, a few seconds later all was quiet.

Mid Air

Like all of the stories here.. none are funny until after the fact. I was flying at a friends house (many miles from the closest flying field) I was flying my Rappy 30 doing some 3D and in general having fun. I heard a noise in the background, it was my friend firing up an 80" profile plane. He took off in another direction and we flew with no problems. Then from no where he came into my field of vision. He had rolled knife edge and hit me broad side. It was the biggest puff of balsa and fiberglass I have ever seen! This was a big plane and my blades cut through his left wing and a big part of the fuse. His prop hit my mainframes squarely on the side and shattered them. My little rappy just folded up. Of course it fell to mother earth like a rock! In all my years of flying I have never had a heli so distroyed! I lost everything.... the motor jug was broken, gyro broken, a couple of servos beyond repair etc. When all was said and done, my rappy fit into 2 dixie cups.... NO JOKE!!! A few bearings and some screws was about it. The only thing that survived was the canopy! His plane landed in a lake and a boat was used to retrive it. I have a new rappy 50 now and we still fly together.

Crashes all only take a few seconds...

Its the panic and attempted recovery and stick waggling that takes the time

The LONGEST crash EVER!!

Must have been in 1995. It is still unknown exactly what happened. But the pilot new he had either receiver and/or battery issues. We were trying to determine which one. He had a X-cell 60 in a very low hover really far away from us in a local park for safety reasons. It hovered about a foot off the ground. Twitched funny and began to slowly rise and pitch forward slightly. The Heli was last seen heading south west at about 20 MPH. Over houses and apt complexes. It turned into a small speck in the sky. We all went home to watch the news to see where it may have hit. Pretty sick feeling to watch your bird fly South for the winter!

A good few years ago I was in the phoenix park on a lovely calm evening with my shuttle ZX, doing pirouettes, one was too fast, and out flew the canopy, quickly after that the Rx battery. My baby continued in a perfect hover at say 70 feet for what was maybe 4-5 mins drifting around lazily. It even did two touch and goes until it caught a tuft of grass and keeled over, very little damage. I did think of trying to reach up and catch it as it drifted down but I wasn't confident to catch it safely. Would have tried if I had a helmet...

Reachin out???

Helmet Shmelmet shoulda grabbed it!! What, were ya scared? LOL.. Not really.. I'm just jammin you up. Better safe than sorry. There was a pilot here in Phoenix that did reach out and grab his when somethig fell off. We all wondered what happened to his hand. Months later his wife let the cat out of the bag. His Shuttle bit him..

Well, I suppose I was, so there
being scared had something or other to do with the 36 stitches I got in my head after shuttle boy gave me a nudge... maybe I'll tell that story here another day.

longest crash I ever had

This is the strangest crash I have ever had. I was flying my millennium, when it went off air. I was flying flat and upright at the time. The heli slowed down and went down. When it hit it went on the side, breaking the tip off one blade, and pushing itself upright again. It then proceeded to spin the blades flat out. The uneven weight of the blades caused the heli to shake violently. As it did this the vibration caused the heli to dig itself into the ground, up to the frames. Unfortunately there was little I could do, and I had to sit there watching it, until it ran out of fuel.

After a couple minutes, the people watching, at the time, got bored and left!!!!!! I sat down and watched. Nothing else I could do.

The red sand totally ate all the gears.

Oh the reason it went off air was a faulty power switch.

Amazingly not much damage!!

Colin,

No ant hill! That was the hole the heli made after it thrashed itself for about 5mins. It flicked the sand with the skids. Unfortunately the sand landed in the gears......

Yeah, amazingly little damage. You can't tell in the crap photo, but the tip of one blade got damaged when it fell on its side. That was enough to through it all out of balance.

Crash still cost quite a bit, as I had to rebuild the engine, and replace all the gears. 8-( The tail drive gear almost had no teeth on it at all!! Thanks to the nice red sand.

Raptor Shake

My longest crash was the end of last year. I had just refitted my Raptor 50 with all the newest up-grades, for night flying only, and decided to trim / ring out the Raptor before flying at night. On the second flight, I decided to try some 3D flips to see how it would respond. On the third flip, inverted, the flybar came loose and slid to one side of the rotor head! This created a severe vibration! Somehow I managed to flip the Raptor to right side up, make a slow 180 degree bank turn back towards the flying field. Everything was going good until I got the bright idea to turn on the throttle hold switch. I started the auto from around 30 feet, and at 20 feet the motor quit! I managed to land, hard, on the skids. Broke the back skid and the Raptor flip over on it's side and dug the blades into the ground, but didn't break the blades.

Damage: bent flybar, one skid= $20.00 Should of been demolished!

ouch

here goes...... 4th tank on my new raven, front yard , i live in a development. the first tanks went flawlessly no probs just great response,power i was in love.. THEN i stopped refueled and decided to get a little altitude to see how she handled in the air, ff loops rolls ect.. well the first loop and roll were beautiful,, the about the time the neighbors from 6 houses came outside to watch my baby{raven}
the doggone tail locked up at full left stick. needless to say how fast can these things spin?? unbelievably fast couldn't tell from nose to tail
which was going or coming. anyway the bird reminder just refilled, wouldn't respond to any control imputs at all, not sure if radio/crystal/ what caused it it just kept climbing and going out of sight literally the tree line is about 5-600 yards away from where i was playing and it cleared them and kept going full throttle and spinning like a mad wasp/bee. finally went out of sight {the horizon} and i jumped in the car and drove out of the development, down the road another turn, and stopped in a field , then started looking, by this time there was a herd of people heading that way{the neighbors kids ect...} felt like is was a man hunt, any way i thouroughly expected not to find any remains or wasn't sure if they would be recognizable. from my baby. any way i could go on about the parts list for her but wont, any how thats how she got loaded with carbon, and i got a kickin new radio/recievers. futaba 9c/pcm

Do "Almost" crashes count?

This one didn't crash, but by all rights....should have....
12 years ago while learning to fly the first time with a GMP King Cobra that I took to work and flew during my night shift. (6pm to 6am shift) After getting the bird off the ground into a hoer, I desided to do some low "back and forth" flying...when suddenly, the heli went up about 30 feet off the ground, and started turning to the right in forward flight. About 2 seconds later, it went back to the way I had the sticks set. ( In hover....yes...I froze and forgot to move the sticks) Instead of flying the heli back to me, I walked closer to the heli and tried it again. Next thing I knew, it went to the left in forward flight for about 10 seconds, and then returned to hover, which is where I had the sticks still. ( Yes...I froze a second time) After doing an underware check, I thought it best to land, walk over and get my heli and carry it back to the shop. Upon arriving at the heli, with the engine idleing, I noticed that the swashplate would first go to the right, then neutral.....then to the left, then neutral. I shut the heli down and returned to the plant. I turned on the radio and heli to see if I had a bad connection when I heard the security personel call one of the guards over the radio....what do ya know....the swashplate went to the right......when the guy answered....it went to the left. I'm just glad the guard wasn't getting bitched out by his boss....it might have done curcles all night.....

Awesome save

Well, I haven't had anything happen to me that even compares to these stories, but I did have an interesting rescue recently...

I've been teaching a friend of mine to fly for a couple of months now. Well, about 3 weeks ago we went out to the local field to burn some fuel.

While he's up there, I take my eyes off of him and his heli. He's been getting good enough that I didn't need to worry. Well, his cell phone rings in his car, and he asks me to answer it for him. I pick up his phone, and was told it was urgent. So, I go over to where he's standing and tell him he needs to take the call. I told him just to unstrap the radio and I'll bring his bird in.

So, when I get the radio, I look, and he's got the heli about 500-700 feet up, and about 1500 feet away. It's just a speck. I have no idea what he was thinking. So, I flip it nose in and pour the throttle to it to bring it in. Just as I do, it runs out of gas.... Keep in mind that it's above a densely wooded area. So, I try to auto the best I can.

Needless to say, we couldn't even see where it went down. (I'm going to buy one of those beeping tracking devices they sell.......)

So, we trudge through the weeds and brush, getting mud up to our knees, and scraping ourselves up on brairs. Finally, I told him that maybe we should get out of the woods, and just start looking along the tree line. So, we walk along the line, and he finally yells "there it is!"

I wouldn't have believed it, if I hadn't seen it. She was sitting there, in about a 3 foot by 3 foot clearing, as pretty as you please. The only thing wrong?
Scuffed canopy.

If only I had that kind of luck with my accidents.

this is definately a story to read:

it happened now about 15 years ago with a concept 30

for some reason the tail went nuts and started spinning, (battery out), the heli started climing with spinning tail untill they didn't see the heli anymore, it was soooooooooooo high in the sky

after 3 weeks they found it back at about 7 km from the original place and it had flown over a motorway

that must be the most longest crash ever

several people have seen this when it happened!!
