What was your longest crash like ?, tell us !!

Two week ago I lost ALL radio control on my Hawk SE V2, for about 3 minutes it was just spinning around on it's axis in about a 50Ft cycle, it was up about 40Ft,,,, LOL, what do you do when that happens ?!!

So I ordered a new receiver !!

I know it could have been potentially dangerous !!!!, but now when I think of it, it's funny...

Ok, ya ready for this...

Last year when I bought my Vigor - I was just getting it into IDLE mode for the first few times. One day I was doing just flying around / no 3D. At that time, I always had trouble keeping a heli at the same altitude (only flying about 6 or 7 months).

I was heading RIGHT to LEFT and the Vigor started to climb, and climb and climb until it was litterally a DOT in the sky.

Well, I had ZERO orientation on it - and I was flying with 3 other guys, and they could not see it either...

So, it starts coming down, and down and down - yet...it was still just a DOT.

I had so much time - I litterally had the time to hand my JR 10X to one of the guys I was with (a 15 year RC veteran) to see if HE could bring it in safely.

Well, down and down it came, and when we finally had it in sight - it was KNIFE-EDGE and doing a death sprial ALL THE WAY DOWN....BOOM!

It was the worst day of my Heli-Life since I have picked up an RC Heli...

Thanks - good post!

I saw Curtis Y. fold the blades during one of his high altitude autos. it was extremely high, he just started the auto when not long after he started, the wind must have been strong enough to fold them back. I would say it took a good minute or so to tumble to the ground. It was the longest crash I have ever seen and it seemed to take forever to reach the ground.

Longest crash, nothing like a curtis crash, but the same thing happened. I was autoing my raptor 30 with Wooden 550's and I pulled 1 roll, and halfway through the second, Smack. An in flight tail boom strike, and then the throttle hold switch went off, and the blades were stuck - no hope of regaining any blade speed above 0rpm. So it fell out of the sky like a paratrooper with no reserve chute. (45$ damage, might as well have not crashed )

Sadly,

My Fury....

I was having a great session and the machine was flying great. At 50 feet off the ground and 100 ft away from me the thing just starts going spastic in the air. The radio had ZERO input. I franticly tried the throttle hold and still nothing. Moved the sticks every direction and still nothing. In the mean time the machine has flipped, pirouetted, looped and bounced around the sky. My friend that was with me was thrilled at my new found nerve and ability he said it was some of the wildest flying I had done. I said, "Hey you can do it too" At that point I tossed him the TX and he about lost his mind.

All the while the machine is still going on it's own. He couldn't believe what was going on. He wasn't alone...

After this went on for what seemed to be forever, 30 seconds perhaps. The machine and its gyrations decided it had enough. It proceeded to find the ground and imitate a steam shovel.

The cause was an in-flight power switch failure. The result was a repair bill of $500. This includes the blades and electronics. Probably not the longest in-flight crash but it was unreal and surreal to me.

What about chicken dances?

My mate's heli dug in on a full tank & beat up a dust storm 'till it went dry. Completely trashed the tail drives & other bits. Wasn't very pretty & no way of shutting it off.

Longest?

Well not nearly as exciting as some of you guys, but, it seemed pretty LONG to me. I recently ran my R22 out of fuel... It was at 80ft. or so altitude going in FFF down wind.... I haven't learning autos yet!!
Now what??? So all I could think of was to lower the collective, I did and the heli just kept gliding....and gliding on and on....it seemed like a very long time, finally it went down out of sight in the next field!! I couldn't believe it went that far, I raised the collective when I thought I should and it looks like it landed tail first and rolled over...I did hear a boom strike. That heli with Fun Key 600 blades covered about 400~ 500 ft. before it went down.......going downwind yet!!! That seems like a long crash to me.........longest one I've had anyway.

Crash crash....

The longest crash I have had is when I was trying to do loops without Idle up. The heli goes up...slow mo....turn 180... slow mo.... down... slow mo... speed down... slow mo... BOOM !! Poof!... dust... all in SLOW MO. Do you realize that all accident always happen in SLOW MO??
And yes...this happened when my mind was farted out, my hands froze and my legs was shaking!!

Got to love this hobby. First it excites you, then it scares the crap out of you!!
Bird is a Raptor 30. $180 damage (1 S9202, RX, frame, tray and the usual).

My Longest Crash

I was flying for about 4 months and I brought my shuttle to a new field to show some guys at work. Well I started doing some stall turns and when I did one to my left it just so happens that the sun peaked out from behind the trees and I looked right at it. Well I had no idea what the heli was doing (you know the feeling you get when you are sitting in your car and the car next to starts backing out and you are not moving but you start to freak out, thats what I felt) I thought it flipped then spun and my eyes didn't clear the spots until the heli was about 10ft from the ground in a dive. I might have been able to save it if I didn't freeze and just watched it happen but anyway it dug for oil in Idle mode. Congratualtions, I have just totaled my first heli...

boy its a real bummer when we all sit back and laugh at all the crashes, but off course here is mine. my trusty old SRX was out well 5 weeks ago now, I just got my buddy into heli's and we just got back from the hobby shop, he just laid out $700+ on radio equipment and stuff. So he wanted to see me fly again, so off I go doing some stall turns rolls and one more stall turn, and then, flipps ,spins, inverted, more flips, he was loveing it and I just told him to look out it aint me. right at the top of my stall turn I lost it about 100+ feet high it just went crazy, i assumed I had a dead battery so I just watched it it stayed up for at least a minute or more, from flips, spastic rolls etc. then in came right at us on knife edge, then at about 50 feet from us it shot off the other way, flipped some more, then straight down inverted, then believe it or not it stopped and hovered inverted for just a split second at about 3-5 feet high and then down it came. we just stood their and said S@@T. I then realized it was still running and I ran over to unhook the fuel line. what happened is one of the arms came off the flybar, the bolt came out so I had no control of anything pitch or cylics. and I was in idle up and never even thought about switching it off. so when i cut the throttle you know what happened, it still went wide open and the cylics were on their own. but hey, I only busted a set of blades it hit square on the head, did not even ding the boom, i just put on new blades and A new bolt and a little straightening on the flybar. ooh I also knocked loose the muffler

Death Of A Concept 30 SRX

First try at foward flight flying off of a frozen pond about 50 feet out from shore. 100 foot pine trees at my back. I think the wind's aloft were to much, as the bird disapeared behind me over the trees. I made some stick imputs........... Bird appeared 150 feet up in a knife edge attitude, then the 10,000 yard stare set in ,as I watched her go straight in. I will never forget that sharp gunshot sound as the parts went 360 degrees! Oh the humanity!

in time, about 20 seconds. failed rx crystal went to lockout during some gentle turns.

gently turned into trees and cost 500.00

in distance, about 200 yds! t/r flew off and was at one end of the field, badly autoed heli in the middle, and blades/ parts all around

Ok, does failsafe not work when any of this happens? Or did you guys just not bother to set it up?
My fail safe settings: All channels hold except throttle - go to an idle.
This way you will know if you got hit becuase the engine will "burp" or if you get locked out, it will at least loose blade speed before it bites the big one.
Someone I know at the field recently crashed b/c it went into failsafe and it wasn't setup. If it was not set to hold all channels (including ch3, holding everything is the defualt) then it would not have gone in the ground blazing at 1800 rpm and might have saved him some agony and damage while watching his helicopter jump and flip over and around on the ground until the radio came back.

I had a recent incident like Volkul's. When the system loses power, all the servos remain at the last position and the engine is just running on its own until the fuel is gone. Throttle hold requires power to the throttle servo to work. I did have failsafe setup like you mentioned. Anyways, my Freya started to slowly pirouette around. A slight breeze finally took it and tilted the rotor ever so slightly to make the heli start to move downwind. It finally came to rest in a patch of grass about 20 feet from a busy street. At least it wasn't roadkill. Looks like the connector between the battery and the switch came loose. This time I used dental floss to secure them together.

Are you sure thats what happened, In theory the servos should have very little power to hold the swash once they are disconnected, that being so, probably about 30oz of force would be coming back from the blades (in order to keep them at hovering pitch) and when nothing stopped this force, the blades should decrease in pitch, and do one of 2 things, 1.) Not create enough lift to keep hovering, or 2.) rev's of engine increase to compensate for the decreased pitch. Possibly you got some jacked up servos or the power was not completely lost, but lost enough to keep the reciever from figuring out the failsafe, Seems kinda useless then eh?

Either way, I make sure all my connections are tight by zip-tie-ing all the connections together on some frame member and using some of the connector clips that I got from a friend, sorry I don't know where he got them.

I put a Raptor 30 in tail first. Boom snapped off, muffler snapped off and throttle linkage etc. broke. It was at full throttle waddling along on what was left of the blades with no muffler for the entire length of our field (400 feet) before going into the ditch at the end filled with water. Total time about 2-3 minutes.
