Hello All,

Since my review in MHT on the Tiger, we've refit it with a OS 46 engine for Elaine Jackson to run around the patch with. I've been amazed at how well this bird flies even with the OS 46 and woodies.

Elaine loves her "Tigress 46" as she calls it. She and Lester both concur that it is comparable in stability to the Xcell birds from Min Air; and that's saying a lot.

Symmetric and semi-symmetric blades

Ashley,

You might mention to Elaine that Audacity offer two sets of FRP/CF composite blades. They're ProModeler Sportsman blades

PDR0074 - Sportsman 600mm Symmetric blades - $49.99
PDR0075 - Sportsman 600mm Semi-symmetric blades - $54.99

Personally, because of my flying style, i.e sportsman maneuvers like loops, rolls, stall turns, autorotations, and a little inverted flying around the patch (as well as the occasional tumble and flip), I prefer the semi-symmetrical blades. What I especially like is they're just awesome for autorotations versus symmetric blades . . . for pretty much the same reasons a semi-symmetrical section sport airplane typically lands slower and is more "friendly" than a fully symmetrical airfoil equipped model.

Of course, you need to take into consideration I'm just a duffer, so while the increased upright performance benefit is easily worth the tradeoff against the inverted handling characteristics of a symmetric blade (for me), those folks whose model is inverted more than it's upright definitely wouldn't agree. You need to be brutally honest with yourself about how you really fly before you buy blades. I'm just out to have fun, so the semis are a no brainer.

A few details about contruction might be helpful. The skins are FRP (fiberglass) and there is CF (carbon fiber) in both the leading and trailing edges. The CF serves to tremendously stiffen the blade in torsion and bending vs. straight FRP blades and also enhances the "toughness" or durability of the blades (against life's minor knocks). Furthermore, while they feature "hollow" construction, they have a balsa spar - plus there's a length of music wire wraped around the blade pivot which runs the length of the blade (out to the tip) where it's embedded into the lead weight (to help keep that from causing additional damage during an accident).

The symmetrics, in particular, are decent blades at a decent price. For 50 bucks I figure they're 90% as good as a set of V-Blades for $115 (I know because I have a set of these too). As for the semis, they're the heat because they auto like there's no tomorrow and simply make me look better than I am during an autorotation.

I am glad that you are enjoying your bird! I have really started to put mine through its paces now that I have my Hyper broken in, piroflips, occaisonal chaos, tic tocs, pulling some high G's (i.e. diving down and pulling it back into a hard flip). This machine autos like no tomorrow! I can pretty much set it anywhere I want it with plenty of inertia left in the blades. I am hoping to get a video up soon. This machine can take the stresses of 3D and is definetly going to make a place for itself. I love the no fear flying part of it, it has advanced my flying ALOT since I have owned it. Parts are inexpensive, the kits are inexpensive, all around best bang for your buck that I have ever seen.
Also, the Tiger holds up VERY well in crashes! I recently stuffed mine wide open inverted, basically rolled it into the ground during low backwards inverted circuits, dumb thumbs, and it only cost me about 50 bucks to fix and the damage was your usual crash victims, not a cracked frame tho!

Hi John,

Thanks for the information on the blades. Sounds like they'd work really well for Elaine's type of flying. I'll pass it along.

Grinch

I'm planning on putting a Tiger in the new Century 50 size Bell 222.

Got too many projects that the funds are already assigned (more like the wife comenderred) but I'm still planning it.

I have never done a scale project yet. I was thinking about it this winter, and the century 222 was on my possabilities list. The price seems to be right.. I just finished my first raptor 90, so I need some time to get some cash built up.

I picked up my mechanics today for a scale project around the Tiger 50.
Haven't picked the subject yet, thinking Bell 230 w/ 4blade head

Just remember -- if the world didn't suck, we would fall off.
