Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > OS 32 no power

Ok...
My os 32 in my Ergo 30ccpm was running great through 6 gallons of fuel.
then my motor started "surging" and acting like it was a tad bit too rich.
It finnally got to the point that it would bog down and not recover causing a few rough landings and 2 crashes.
I have replaced glow plugs, fuel line and even fuel with no results

Today I went out and it would stuggle to lift my heli and start to bog down.
I have played with pitch curves, throttle curves, lowend and topend carb settings with very little results, so I tore the engine down to look for scored cylinder sleve and\or any internal damage... Nothing! it is clean with good compression and looks great even the carb is clean and tight.

Can anyone out there help point me in the right direction?

Hmmm. I'm no expert and i should be asleep but maybe your clutch is slipping.

I also am no expert on Heli's either and have only been flying for a few months now.
But how would a slipping clutch cause my engine to bog down? I would think that it would cause the engine to wind up and cause my head speed to drop.
Is this true?

Thanks

Wes

Hehe yeah you have a very good point. The fatigue is affecting me(at least that is my excuse) Well ok but to be sure it will not hurt checking. A lot of heli stuff defies logic. If spock were here he would go mad
Did you play with your settings at all? Maybe the problem is that the engine is overheating but i do not see why you would have to struggle to lift off. Sorry, i am not very helpfull when tired

Check all the engine bolts in the head and the back plate.....If all of those are tight, take the high speed needle out and pump fuel through the nipple, and also through the needle valve housing, once thats done put the needle back in screw it in till it stops then back it out 2 turns and see if that helps.......I sounds like your running lean.
Good luck

I once had the fuel line in my tank get soft from age and several gallons of fuel. This caused my Nexus w/OS 32 to do the same thing. It would bog down starve out and eventually shut off. It's a long shot but something quick to look at.

Hope this helps,
Chuck

Maybe the fuel pickup is clogged in the main tank or in the header tank if it has 1? Did you completly disassemble the carb and clean it? Sounds lean..........you replaced ALL fuel lines including inside everything? Your fuel filter could be clogged....................try a new 1 or open it up and clean.

Did you check the rear bearing of the engine for play? One quick and easy way to detect rear bearing failure is to listen for a weird resonation to the heli while hovering. It's one of those sounds that 'just wasn't there before" but you can't find anything wrong. I've had this happen several times with a couple of OS32's.

If you take the engine out and remove the backplate, you would also be able to check for play between the crank and case.. usually you can grab the output end of the crank and make the back of the crank move (not in and out, but side to side) if this is the problem.

Also, if the rear bearing is bad, it will eventually ruin the liner as it disintegrates.

Wes,
I was also thinking, are you getting foam in your tank. You could also have a new vibration creating foam which would make you run lean.

Good Luck,

Did you check your clunk line in your tank? Remove it completely and look for any gunk as well as deterioration of the line itself. Also check the tubing going through the rubber stopper in your tank. It is usually very small i.d. and will clog easily, especially if your clunk line has started to break down.

I did pull the head and backplate everything looks great there. Also, my fuel is not foaming and I pulled the tank lines and carb and dissasembled and found no crap.
My clunk line does not seem to be soft and is clear of anything that may block fuel flow.

I did put on a header tank and my surging problem only got worse until my main tank was 1\2 full then it ran normal.
I had to lean my low end with the heder tank in place.

I took the header tank out and re-adjusted my engine. Could my problem be a mis adjusted low-end setting?
Also how can I test my clutch for slippage? it seems to engage just fine and hold strong when I hold my rotor and throttle up.

Thanks for all the replies.

I had similar symptoms with an OS50 , would bog and die when coming up to hover pitch. Turned out I had it way to weak, richening it up cured it and now it runs great. Maybe try the head-loaders and play with the needles with the motor under load. I always get somewhere near with the head loaders before going to the field with a new heli/motor (exceptiing the OS50 above !!) Live and learn !

Is the pressure line from your muffler plugged, not getting pressure to your tank?????

We'll get this yet,

well Chuck, I just checked the muffler pressure line and it is not clogged. But speaking of mufflers I have been running an airplane muffler off of an OS 46 until I can afford a real Heli muffler.

It has run well in the past with this muffler and I know it hasnt brought out the motors full potential.
Could this undersized muffler in some way messed up my engine?

"Bog down and not recover" sounds to me like an engine that's much too lean.

How many turns out is the main needle valve?

And, just for completeness, what head speed are you hovering and with and how much pitch are you running in a hover?

Update

Ok, not sure what I just did but everything is working great now
I just re-set up my curves and started from scratch.
Tonight My lowend setting was way too rich same with my top end.

So right now I am just going to give this a try and go buy a real heli muff.

Thanks for all your suggestions

Wes,
I don't see any problem with using an airplane muffler on a heli. They generally offer a slight edge in HP but really don't affect cooling or anything vital like that. However, it sounds like you may be recovering from a sick engine.

Good luck flying,
