| Crystals are either "good", or "bad". They RARELY die a slow, painful death. Having flown RC since about 1970, I've lost one crystal. It was broken in a nasty crash, along with just about everything else it was connected to. My small pattern plane went full bore, straight down into asphalt. The end of my crankshaft along with the prop nut were embedded about a1/2 inch into the asphalt, and the crankshaft mushroomed in the area of the venturi. Very bad crash.
You really have to work to break a crystal. From what others have said, you might have just had a loose connection in the crystal socket in the receiver. If the socket itself isn't a loose fit on the pin, there's an outside chance that the solder joint between the socket and the PWB is bad. After you replaced the crystal and verified that the RX still worked, did you then put the suspect crystal back in place, to see if it would work again? If a new crystal works, but the original doesn't, then suspect the crystal as being fractured.

| This is the first i have ever seen a crystal go bad. I have had a few dead on arrivals but never seen one go bad when it was already a good one.

Where are you buying crystals that you have "had a few dead on arrivals"? I'd wonder about the supplier and where he's getting his stock from if this is a common occurrence for you.
