Falcon 50 SE II REPORT -- Page 18-23 -- Tail Rotor

I hope everyone had a great weekend of flying???? I know I did.

So on with the project.

Page 18 ends with me putting the landing gear on, and begins with the assembly of the tail rotor. I found that the tail rotor was super easy to do!! NO errors anywhere in the instruction book on these pages.

Step 28 had me JB weld a locking ring to the back of the Tail Pitch Plate Assembly; I thought this was a nice touch to make sure this piece does not come apart.

Again, the instruction book is for both the Hawk and the Falcon, thus many of the steps on these pages I simply skipped over because they were for the hawk.

When it came to putting the Tail Rotor Grips together, once again I pulled out my gram scale. EACH Tail Rotor Grip weighed in at exactly 3.5 grams each. I also weighed the Tail Rotor Blades, the ball bearing, then nuts and the screws!! EVERYTHING was the same except for one tail rotor. IT WAS only .1 gram off from the other. I took some fine sand paper and scrapped off some of the excess plastic from around the rotor blade, and then I weighed them again. This time they were perfectly the same.

In step 31, when it came time to put the grips, thrust bearing, and blades (step 32) on, before I attached the Steel Tail Rotor Hub to the Tail Rotor Drive Shaft, I put the completed assembly on a blade balancer (airplane type), and it was perfectly balanced right down the center.

Step 34B was a little tricky, getting the Torque Tube Drive Shaft put into the exact spot, but I took my time and it went together perfectly. Don't neglect to use a little soft soap to help push it through like the instructions suggest.

Finally, I'm most impressed with the Bell-crank Assembly. EVEN this moving part has 2 ball bearing on it. AGAIN, my Nexus has plastic rubbing against plastic.

Any Questions????

Falcon 50 SE II REPORT -- Page 24-31 -- Putting it all together

Well I'm almost done!! On the following pages I found no errors, and it was very simple and basic to follow.

BASICALLY, all I did was put it all together.

Myself personally, I don't really care for the sticker pattern on the canopy, but I did it like the instructions suggested. IT'S NOT THAT bad, but then again, it's a good reason to get a fiberglass canopy and have it custom painted!!!

IF you will notice in the picture, I went with the tail rotor servo on the tail. I also has an extra carbon push rod, so I put that on instead of the one in the instruction book.

Tomorrow, I have the day off, and I'm going to do some really cool pictures of it once I get the RX installed and it's ready to fly.

Flying pixs probably will not come till this weekend when I can give you a report on how it flys.

I ALMOST CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!

Any Questions???

Yours,

Kirk Voclain

Falcon 50 SE II REPORT -- Page 32 - END -- FINISHED!! And she's up, up, and away!!!!

SHE FLIES!!!!!

We have this superstition at out flying field. Maybe it's because I'm a Professional Photographer and everyone wants me to take pictures of there new ships??? But the superstition is that you NEVER, NEVER, photograph a new ship until you fly it, at least ONCE.

So this morning in keeping with that tradition, I got up at 8:30 AM (bet the neighbors loved that) and cranked up my new Falcon SE II!!!

WE'LL as info, it does not start unless you have the battery connected to the glow plug. I was so excited, and so anxious to hear that engine purr, that I forgot to connect the battery!! I cranked and cranked!!! But finally, I realized what I had forgot and one crank and she fired right up.

IN the air it was so smooth I could hardly stand it. I counted to 5 with my fingers off the controls, and that was before I trimmed it.

The blades did not need ANY TRACKING!!! ZERO!! They were perfect!! I went with the WOODY blades that came with the crash kit that I bought from Helicopter World. After a few flights, if I see that I'm stable and not having too much trouble, then I'll put on the figerglass ones that came with the kit.

This certainly tells me this is a quality product!!! I did take my time putting it together. I did check and recheck everything!! And maybe that's why it's running so tight!!!

The final pages in the instruction book were basic radio and servo hook ups. I set up my radio per the pitch and throttle curves diagrams in the instruction book.

EVERYTHING has been set up for mild, easy, flying. I'll get crazy later, for now, let's just do some easy flying.

I can't say enough about how wonderful I think this KIT is. I highly recommend it!!!!

After this weekend, I'll have some more "FLYING" pictures to post.

Finally, several people asked me where I was going to put the gyro. I really had no idea???? After looking at it for about 20 minutes, I decided to make a little plywood shelf under the canopy. PLUS being I put the rudder servo on the tail, this allowed me to put my 502 gyro in the spot where the rudder servo was supposed to go (see photo). I LOVE THIS location!!! The 502 gyro has a volt sensor that it displays!! SO you never have to wonder if you have enough power to fly!! VERY NICE FEATURE!!!

Any questions?????

Yours,

Kirk Voclain

>>The Swash Plate not only appears to be a very functional device, IT truly is a work of art<<

I will agree that this Swash Plate is functional. I have to disagree that it is a work of art.
It appears to me that they were cutting a few corners in the manufacturing of this Swash Plate.
The edges and corners on my swash plate were razor sharp. After cutting my arm on the lower ring of the swash plate while working on the helicopter I decided to take mine down to my shop and deburd it before reinstalling it. Other than that small problem the metal Swash Plate on the Falcon is much nicer than the plastic Swash Plates Found on helicopters in the same price range.

If you’d like to see a real work of art take a look at the helicopter on these web pages. The mechanic’s of this machine are definitely superior to any production model helicopter kit I’ve seen. Although I think with the canopy on she is a bit on the ugly side. I bet she’s a rocket

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!!

OK, if you have read through this entire post, you are now wondering how this puppy flys??? Correct????

I would like to report that this Falcon is so smooth!!! And so tight!!! And such a pleasure!!!

I went to the flying field this afternoon and the only other guy who flys helicopters was there. WE are at about the same level as far as experience. HE just bought a used XCELL all graphite and metal and EXPENSIVE!!!

I did not get to fly his ship, but I'm hoping to do it tomorrow. But just watching his ship, and my new Falcon SE II, well, they appear to have the same look. Both ships we can count to about 5 with our hands off the sticks. When you dump the nose, they both track so smooth!!

ONLY thing is the XCELL is only 5 times the price!!!!

I can not help but highly recommend this helicopter!!! I'm, I'm, I'm speechless!!

Tomorrow I'll be taking some images of it in the air, I'll be posting them Monday. TILL then happy flying!!

Falcon 50 SE II REPORT -- Flying -- The end, or the beginning!!!

I flew all weekend!!! I had a blast. This ship is ROCK SOLID!! I had a 60 Size XCell to compare it to this weekend (friend just bought one used) and frankly, I feel the Falcon flew better.

NOW in defense of the XCell, it did have a discontinued Gyro on it, and the Falcon did have a Futaba new 502 gyro, but beyond that, I think the Falcon still felt a little bit tighter.

EVEN my friend who owns the XCell said the Falcon felt LIGHT and solid. NOW that could be a good thing, or it could be a bad thing.

MY point is this: I'm NOT saying that XCell is bad, I'm only saying that for $399, you just cannot go wrong with this kit.

She tracks so straight, and hovers so smooth.

I'm impressed!!!

Thanks for allowing me this space to post this report. IF you
found it informative, YOU are welcome!!!

IF you have any questions, PLEASE FEEL FREE to post them.

Yours,

Kirk Voclain

PS: Thank you Lamar Cooley for taking the pictures!! It's really, really hard to fly and take pictures at the same time

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...

This is a good aid for anyone who decides to build a Falcon, but, damn can you talk. Are you this vociferous when speaking or just with the written word? Did you ever think that if you figured out the manual, others can too. A lot of guys have built this kit before you. This is not meant to be a put down, but to have a newbie, or anyone for that matter, re-explain an already descriptive instruction manual is like reading a See Dick Run book to a college graduate. Lighten up!

There's always ONE in the croud....

.....Sidney......

If you don't mind me asking, how does it feal to be the odd ball??? The left over??? The strange one in the croud???

I've so far recieved nothing but praise from fellow readers. SEVERAL have emaild me thanking me for the article. Several have told me they decided to buy a Falcon just because of what they read here?

So you are the ODD MAN OUT??? YOU seem to be the only one who did not like the article? Must feel kinda lonly over there on the wrong side of the fence?

OH well "there's always ONE in the croud"!!
