looks like your time in front of the CAD paid off! Looks similiar to the Heliworks frame.. have you seen those? the battery tray seems to stick out as a "obviously gonna break here", no?

regardless, it looks really nice and very clean. great work battlercon!

Flytech,

Lots of hours on the cad now those pictures are an older frame version I have since made some major changes.
I flew Version one Today and WOW!!!!! just moving the weight up higher makes flips and inverted transitions so........... Much smoother.

mapmanufacturer,

Well the pictured frame is Black G10 which is a little Heavier the weight savings with that frame is only about 35 grams I suspect C/F will drop a bit more the G10 is a nicer material as in more flexible (forgiving in a crash) and Waaaaay cheaper. but at the price of a tad higher in weight

I hope to get some in flight pics this weekend My club is hosting a fun fly and plan to let some of the well skilled pilots take her for a spin.

I'm thinking about getting a sherline cnc mill at the end of the year...just doing a little research right now.

yf22k,

I have a medium size production CNC mill and router
Hmmmmm A little sherline I Don't think it will be able to cut a frame size part Waaaaaay to small

Well test flights were Great!!!!!!!
I let some really good pilots give the new frame some torture. Guys from Team JR ripped up the skies with it. Pilots like
Scott Grey and Rob Giles they both really enjoyed the micro scene and the stability in the Trex with the NEU motor on 3s had more power than needed to do all the tricks in the book hope to have some flight pics soon

Hey battlercon,
First, Awesome work on the frames and CAD work. GREAT JOB!! I would be very interested in knowing the machine that you are using.

yf22k,
My site is about the sherline machine and my trials and errors. You should be able to cut the t-rex frame size on the mill, Especially the 2000 one. I have the 5410. Check it out and if you have questions write me on email. www.cuttingedgecnc.com

O yeah Keith,

If you interested in making frames and other flat pieces do a search for cnc routers too.

Well i've been designing an r/c car in solidworks for about half a year now and want to machine it myself. I figure I can use the mill for other stuff as well such as these frames.

Keith,

The sherline (or any mill for that matter) as long as it is kept up should be able to cut the parts you want. Skill, patients and experience is going to play the biggest role next to part size.

I checked the t-rex and making side frames for it on a "sherline" size machine would be no problem. Of course if you can afford larger go that route.

Ok thanks. your website looks great. i've only been browsing for a few minutes and its very helpful. Right now i'm looking for a program to convert solidworks parts(SLDPRT) to g-code. I'm thinking i'll probalby go with the sherline 5000 or 5400 series. The 2000 series is nice but i don't think the extra 4 directions are cnc capable. A little bit overkill for my purposes I think.

Heh i was just reading your beginner section. I actually ordered the "Tabletop Machining" book last week.

yf22k,

If you are considering a mill a sherline is a good choice. I have the 2000 that I converted to cnc. I use a 5400 at work for robotics prototyping. It is a good mill, but it has its limitations. The biggest problem that I have found is that there isn’t much throat on the y-axis. The 2000 series has much more room on the y-axis. If you are think of doing a lot of 2 and 2.5 D cutting the 2000 series is a far better choice. Just my option. The taig mill is worth considering. The table is much heaver and the x-axis will give you about 12 inches of usable table. The major advantage of taig is that it uses 1/2 inches lead screws. The 1/2-inch lead screws tend to stay in adjustment (backlash) much better then the 1/4-inch sherline. The bonus is I think the taig is cheaper. I would not buy taig's lathe. The sherline lathe is far better that the taig. If you are thinking about buying a mill check out this web site: http://www.timgoldstein.com/secure/eStore/. Tim is a great guy and very cnc savvy. He helped me out a lot when I set up my machines. His prices are really good too. I have purchased all my tooling and machines from him. I also buy my carbon plate from him. NICE CARBON!!! Great price! I also use SolidWorks to do my design work. What an awesome program!

Yeah i noticed that the 2000 series allows you more throw in the y axis. How does the 2000 work with cnc equipment? is it just the normal 3 or 4 axis movement while keeping the additional 4 directions square? I'm quite new to machinging...I understand how CNC works but not familiar with all the mill and lathe terminologies yet. My book should be coming in a couple weeks. I'll look at the cnc forums at the end of the week. Yeah I love solidworks. Very simple to use. What cam program do you use to convert the .sldprt parts files to g-code?

My mill is set up with x,y,z and a-axis cnc controlled. All the rest are manual. I use BobCAD to convert my SolidWorks files to cut able g-code. From there the code is loaded into MACH 1. MACH 1 then runs the code. BobCAD will not accept .sldprt files. You will have to convert them into .dxf or .iges files. I purchased my breakout board from bob Campbell. http://www.campbelldesigns.com/breakout_board_plus.htm
Very helpful guy to work with. I am running my stepper motors with Gecko driver boards. They are VERY smooth! http://www.geckodrive.com/products.htbml

Good luck getting things together! I love my mill I would not give it up!
