OK here it is..... My Avant is ready to go....

My Avant canopy is out for painting. I am using an old Freya canopy for now.

I will get it weighed soon.

Canopy

This canopy was my very original Freya canopy.

The top was heavily trimmed already. I do need to trim the right side bottom some.

The engine sits much higher in the Avant than the Freya and the very bottom of the canopy is right at the midrange needle on the carb.

Actually if you look at the bottom of the canopy you can see how high the canopy is compared to the Freya frame. Looks dorky at the moment.

You can trim it like the one in the original prototype.

Looks great....

Evan,

Good luck with the new bird and thanks again for sending the upgrade part for my Freya. It is alway nice to be able to get a part/upgrade from another RR member.

Looks Good!

Evan,

Looks good, how can you resist fueling it up and taking her out!

I trimmed my canopy a bit more radically, moving the mounting points forward a bit. I thought using the stock holes left too much 'cab forward' profile when mounted. Plus, you have all that room in the nose that the Avant doesn't use. But, after seeing yours, it looks cool!

Canopy

After seeing how Augusto had to trim it up, I decided to see how it looks normally.

I agree that there is much more nose than needed.

It is a spare canopy so chopping it up would be ok, but it does fit ok as is.

I am very anxious to fire her up. Normally I set the initial stuff up in my driveway. Honestly, being CCPM and not being 100% sure of the mechanics, I will take her to the field where I have considerable more room.

Hovered

OK, finally hovered the Avant in my Driveway. No time to get to the field, so I fired her up in the driveway.

The engine is a OS 91 Sx with 60K 3 needle carb and Perry pump.

Blades needed a 1/2 turn on the link to track correctly. Engine seems to be running lean. I have a leak somewhere. Quick check of plumbing looked ok.

I will pull the engine and tank and see what I can find.

Glad to see you got her started. What are your setting in the 9z? Could you post them here for people to have a ballpark figure? How did you get the tank in place? also does anyone know what size drill I need to make the holes for the canopy grommets?

I WANT I WANT I WANT MY AVANT.
Im not going to bug those wonderfull people at CX as I know they are busy, but it ISNT HELPING MY INSANITY this waiting :P

9Z settings

Here is what I have:

Swash SR3: Ail -40% Ele -40% Pit -35%

Channels: Ail, Thr, Rud are reversed.

Pitch: -10,0,10 to start

According to Augusto, you use the swash %'s above to set the swashplate throw. Maximize the throw on each until before the swash/servo's bind.

I am discussing now with Augusto the cyclic pitch settings.

If you never set up a CCPM system before, you definetly want to discuss this with Augusto. Remember, in this CCPM system, the swash goes DOWN for pitch to increase.

Tank. The tank is a very tight fit to get it installed with the tubings coming off the top of the tank. I am thinking that is where my leak is.

I use a tappered sanding stone on my dremel to open up the holes on the canopy and then fit the grommets. Don't try to drill them, use a coned sanding drum or stone on a dremel.

So in hind sight would it have been better to put the tank in before the frames are joined together?

Actually and suggestions on how to best build the AVANT would be usefull, for those of us waiting and Augusto to incorporate into the manual. Just a thought.

I've been studying my manual closely and I noticed in the pic(pg 30 step 21) it looks like the rudder servo wheel has to be cut like that on a Fury. Once I get my electronics in and i'm ready for set up could email me the instructions and tips that you gave to Evan or include them in the new manual? Also how do the fuel tank outlet tubes need to be bent? Are they the same as the X-xpec or should they be bent differently? At what step should I intall the tank and boom supports? I noticed it doesn't show in the manual.

carcrasher,

The tank is installed right before step 24 because you need it in place to install the right side boom support.

The tank tube needs to be bent downwards to clear the bottom tail pulley bearing block.

The servo wheel I used came from one of my furys but it doesn't need to be cut like that.

Augusto.

Building an Avant

Overall, the Avant is a very simplistic build.

Remember, the idea of the Avant is to take 3D to an extreme where other heli's fall short. This design assumes that the flyer has a high skill level in building and flying, and some experience with CCPM.

For me, the challenge was working with a manual that is still being developed as well as never working with a CCPM system before.

I was/am very pleased with the help Augusto has given me. As a comparison, his personal service is at the level we Hirobo flyers have come to appreciate from Jeff Green of Altech.

Building the Avant was a great experience because the changes that Augusto made helped me to begin to understand heli design and setup.

Once the manual is completed, this will be a very quick building to flying machine.

Tonight I pulled the engine and since I have it out, I will tear it down and replace the ring and bearings. I will also pull the tank and check for the air leak.

Evan, did you seal the carbon plate hedges and fins with ca before installation ?
I always do this to prevent oil residue to seep in but i'm curious if others do it and if it's really necessary, apart from maybe sanding the edges.

Hi,

I've always done that using thin CA with good results, specially when the edges take a hit or touch the ground.
