Avant

Man the weather here is really bad. We just got 5 inches of snow. I was not able to fly it over the weekend and this week looks bad for weather.

As soon as the weather breaks I will definately post some video and flying pics.

Here are some pics of my 1st of two Avants that are finished with the canopy installed.

SWEET looking heli Big Dave, but what paddles are those? Not quite Hirobo E3 paddles, but similar.

Hi Si,

Those are the new Carbon SAB paddles. They are heavy enough for the Avant to be stable in a hover and responsive enough for
Extreme 3-D.

Flew my Avant

Wow,
This is a very FAST machine with incredible Collective response. I managed to get one tank through the machine to break in the new motor before having a LiPo battery failure. We think it may have been from the cold. Here are three pics of it in the air. The Temp was only 30 degrees with a 20+mph wind in our faces which computes to major COLD! We froze our butts off! Check out the smoke and the snow. Very windy.....
I will have more pics and video as soon as the weather gets better for 3D flying and laying down some Smack!.
Winter is returning tonight for another 5 days of cold and some light snow. I will keep every one posted.

Can someone explain why this machine is being repoted to have such brilliant collective control, because other than it now being CCPM, all the head is still the same is it not ??

Is it just because the swash has alot more grunt behind it (3 servos working together, not idividuals) its being found to be more responsive

In my opinion, the machine is so much lighter than my previous machines that I have flown with CCPM, therefore it is like a rocket. Weight certainly has a lot to do with the way it climbs out and pumps. It was very impressive. There was no interaction noted in the CCPM.
As for forward fight, there too it was extremely fast. I was running +11 -11 on collective and the machine was clearly faster than other 90 class machines I have owned and flown.

As for 3D, I can already tell that the machine is going to be Insane. I will wait however to comment until I can put it through Kaos, Piro Flips, J-Rocks, Hurricanes, Tic-Tocs, and ect. Then I will know a lot more about the machine and be able to comment from experience. We are waiting for better weather here!

Avant

I also flew my Avant for the first time yesterday.

Breaking in a New OS 91 C Spec PS, so the flights were gentle. I put on 2 flights.

The collective is VERY quick. Amazing how fast you can go from a hover to full power climb out.

We had some wind so I really couldn't tell if I had any ccpm interaction, possibly I need to tlit the swash forward on full climb out.

Forward flight is very quick as noted in the previous thread. Tracking was very good, I did some HUGE loops and tracking looked ok. I did not do any 3D, as the engine was way too rich.

I did shoot 1/2 dozen auto's. Very light weight on the sticks, auto's extremely well.

I am running "C" 70's on the V2 dampners, no wobbles on auto's.

So far, I am very impressed.

I hope you didn't lose it due to the li-po problem. I hope to have mine up soon. I've been busy at work so I only get to work on it on the weekends for a few hours at a time. Not only that but, there is only so much I can do with the limited space that I have.
Do I set the phase timing like the manual states to do? just curious. Hope to see more vids/ pics of everyone's Avant as they get them.

No it's not the same head. The head is heavily modified. The flybar ratio is different, the swashplate to bladeholder ratio is different, the mixing arm ratio is different, the delta ratio is different There is a ratio block that's attached to the seesaw and new CNC machined mixing arms as well as conical delta spacers with adjustable shims to match the blades. The result is a very different kind of flying. It's dificult to explain you have to fly one to understand how different it feels. It takes some time to get used to how it follows your comands so tightly.

A nice thing is that you can build the head in different configurations for many different flying styles all the way to stock freya configuration.

Hi carcrasher

I did not loose the machine fortunately. It flew into the snow right in front of me, locked me out completely, and idled at 1600 for 15 minutes until it ran out of fuel. It blew off the SAB tail blades and bent the tail hub. That was the only damage. Very lucky!

Hi Augusto,

im just wondering if you managed to make any progress with the Freya version of the head mods.
also, how do you feel these head mods might work on a Hirobo Twister ? it is also very light (mostly carbon) and its CCPM like the Avant, with the same FFZ-2 head.
thanks.

carcrasher, about phasing check this out:

No progress at all I have been to busy working on some other projects so we abandoned that for now.

Also the important thing is not only the weight but more importantly the distance of the CG to the head that acts as lever so that mod doesn't work on the Freya because the CG is way lower acting as a more powerful lever so everything goes haywire.

I already had to convince someone by letting him try it and after he almost crashed he now believes me when I say it definitely doesn't work on the Freya.

Thanks Augusto,

I presume this all comes as part of the Avant upgrade ?

Edit: forget that question, found answer, used my brain and looked on your site, think I got a headache now

Hey Augusto - thanks for the reply.

i bet there would be a difference then if you use the 10mm higher shaft on the Freya or not - how far away is the CG anyway between these 2 machines ? (Freya short shaft Vs. Avant) ?

and im just wondering, when you say it goes haywire - what exactly happens ?

thanks.
