new hawk pro...

i liked it out of the box,especially the metal frames,servo setup,and how light the heli was but then after a few flights the heli began to reflect its $200.00 price tag.cheap plastic caused the back boom support attachment to strip,but the ultimate let down is when the clutch began to slip after the fifth flight.the muffler sounds like a dirtbike with the baffle out and the struts look like spider legs.if you can get past all of that the heli flys great especially with the os 37.i suspect after i spend a couple hundred on upgrades(that are seemingly hard to find) ill have a sweet little heli,or i could have just bought another raptor and be done with it.

My hawk pro (actually a Hawk Sport with wire drive tail) has a O.S 50 hyper in it with a stock clutch set-up. Never had slipping, I have zero issues with the clutch desgin and for me its great and bullet proof, even after 10 gallons of CP30% fuel, I still run the same plastic clutchbell without any problems and everything in the clutch design works great for me.

the landing gear for "some" may appear ugly, but they are functional and very light weight for better preformance.

Very rare will you get a good pipe in a helicopter kit (let alone a $200 kit). Thats why theres aftermarket!

Hi Bowflex,

Do you use carbon or wood blades and size (550)?

Also, are you 3D/aerobatic?

I use Funkey 550 fiberglass blades with a 2000 rpm headspeed. I also use the 14tooth speed-up gear and the 53tooth grey counter gear on the constant tail drive upgrade.

+ / - 13 degrees pitch with 7.5 degrees cyclic

No governor

I do full 3D stickbanging with it and its FAST. Its great and personally on my machine, there is little overspeeding of the rotor.

I agree ezduzit. I didn't have the good luck of others to give a great testimonial on the Hawk Sport or Hawk Pro. But a few hundred dollars later, they are a whole lot better. The Pro is now a 50. Just not as graceful as my Raptor, but I'm gettin 'er close.

Century birds in my area/field are very rare (saw another Hawk here 3 months ago).

I just bought a Hawk Pro last week. Setup as follows.(revised 4-22-07)
OS 37SZH
Century CNC throttle arm
Hitori pipe
Remote glow plug igniter
GY-401
S3152 servos on ele,ail, and pitch
S9254 mounted on Century carbon plate for rudder
S3152 on throttle
2S 2100mah lipo RX pack
Duralite 6V reg with 5.1V step down for rudder servo
8ch PCM receiver.
Sullivan 14oz flex tank to replace the factory tank
2oz header tank
Areotech 570mm aeroflat carbon mains
4mm flybar upgrade
Century 30g FAI 4mm paddles
6mm feathering spindle with thrust bearings
Century Tuff Struts landing gear(highly recommended for beginners!)
Little rubber thingies for landing gear so I don't skid on cement
Triple bearing mod to idler gear shaft

During assembly I noticed that the swash was not level when the TX sticks were all centered. Looking a little closer I noticed the flybar control links were not the same length. What should the end to end length be for these. I could not find this in the manual. Are there any upgrades that you guys would recommend for someone just learning how to fly? I have a blade CP Pro and G3 flight simulator.

I added a head button, and anti-rotation bracket. I have been very happy with mine as a learning platform.

I added the anti-rotation bracket today too. I've also added a header tank. I'm going to relocate the rudder servo with that nifty CF piece that Century makes too.

Is anyone else running the OS 37? What kind of flight times are you getting? This thing burns alot of fuel.

COOKIEULT70...

I'm running the OS .37 and yes I'd say it does use a little more fuel than the OS .32 does. I'm still running mine slightly rich though as I've only run about 15 tanks of fuel through it and it was getting rather hot on me, so I'm keeping it on the rich side. Doesn't seem to make much difference in the power though. HS are around 1750-1800 with the CF blades. I tore up the sky (my way!) this weekend in Mooresville, NC with it and it did just fine. I was able to do some nose down funnels for the first time (twenty mistakes high mind you) and several other odd looking maneuvers as well. They have no name as I'm sure they aren't real maneuvers.

I also may have just seen the next Curtis Youngblood this weekend too. The kid is just 12 years old and was doing some stuff with a Stratus that was just incredible, but then again almost anything 3D to me is incredible.

Later...

Scott!

i set my idle up to as 0 inputs. that means no mixing or changing or any inpouts at all.
then with the radio pitch/ throttle set to center stick i make sure all swash plate is level, my mixing arms are parallel to each other and my blades are at 0 degrees pitch. My throttel is mechanically set to 1/2 open. - thats the fast break down of my set up.
if this is close or similar to your set up i change my regular idle up 1 to my stunt or 3d flying mode. normal is normal.
normal curves usually range as follows:
0= stick down (full negative)
1= 1/4 stick
2= 50% or center
3= 3/4 stick
4= full stick input (wot)

1= pitch around -2 degrees
throttle 0 - i want it to stall, subtrim will keep it running
2= p- set to 5 or 6'
t- ranges between 70-78% output of servo
3= p- middle between full and 50% mark
t- middle between full and 50% mark but usually ranges between 85- 90
4= p- 100% or what ever it needs to see +11'
t- 100%

i run a pretty high head speed so if your just trying to get it hovering try using the lower range of these #'s different pipes will make that range change considerably.

i run a jr 8310 radio if you want my exact #'s pm me
good luck hope this helped

only you have the power to make no difference!

Thanks Daniel. I did just that. I think Century kinda messed up with the Pro's manual. The Sprot's manual is WAY more informative. They should have just copied it and made the appropriate "Pro" spacific changes.

I got some new goodies for my Pro today.
1. 4mm flybar upgrade with paddles.
2. 6mm feathering shaft upgrade.
3. Head button.
4. Anti rotation bracket.

Question. Has anyone ever had the pins come out of their tail gears?

It's never happened to me, but, I've heard of at least 3 cases from people here on RR. In just about all of those cases, the folks either didn't use thread lock on the set screws holding the pins in or they didn't dissasemble and check for thread lock on any factory assembled components if that had bought the machine as an ARF.

Well that could have been the problem. I don't remember seeing a set screw. When I took the tail case apart, the pin that holds the gear on the torque tube side fell out. I didn't see the set screw so I didn't think it was missing. You got me to thinking though and I looked it up in the manual. Sure enough, it is supposed to have one. Now I'm off to the hardware store for another bottle of blue locktite.

What do you mean by "not very". That is a relative term. To one it could mean 5 years to another it could mean 1 month.

Was it a Hawk Pro? That is the one we are discussing here.

Why I ask is that I could say the same about a friend of min buying a Minair X-Cell, but it was the old 1001 unit not one of their later SE's.

The X-Cell 1001 was a far cry from the SE or PRO. But the 1001 was still a good heli for its day.

IMHO, the HAWK PRO is a great little 30 size heli for today. But the old Hawk II would not be so today.

I could go on comparing other brands and models but I think you get my drift.

You are entitled to think wat you want from a friend experience with whatever model. But if you have not owned and flown a HAWK PRO then it is all speculation on your part.

Actually there were 2 of them,they both got real sloppy very fast. There have been a couple of others show up at the field also,you dont get a $500 heli for $200,theres a very good reason why it is so cheap.
