Even if I had the money laying around I would not buy that radio! It is a computer and computers fail! It is pure status and in my books that is pure dumb!

slow,

I'm a bit confused on this "locking" business. I assume you're saying that you cannot change modules in your 9Z from 72mhz to 35mhz (or whatever you use in Norway)?

The 9Zs we buy here (US) can go back and forth between 72mhz modules and 50 mhz modules.

If I'm understanding you correctly, Futaba 9Zs sold in Europe are NOT compatible with US modules?

BTW, if I had $2200 lying around, I'd buy two NIB 9Z transmitters and use the remainder to load up on servos and receivers.

I almost boughtone too, then I realized that I don't fly scale helis and that I'm never going to get a Turbine plank so it made no sense to get it.

I think he's referring to the 14mz with regard to region locking, not the 9Z. This was the first I've heard of this region locking, sounds like a bad move on Futaba's part if it's true.

If you really need all its unique features, and know how to use them, got for it.

Otherwise, you'll look as a dumb a$$ that got a Ferrari to go to the supermarket.

Here is what I heard / understand about the region locking on the 14MZ.

The Synth Rx for the 14MZ system has a unique id code that must be 'locked' to the Tx in order for it to be addressed.
Futaba wants to code the id to regions. Like europe will get a certain range of id codes, US another and asia another.
This is so a 14MZ owner in the UK can't save money and buy the Rx at half price in Hong Kong. He would have to buy from the UK distributer at full price to get a Rx with the correct id code - if he bought the TX from the UK to begin with. If he bought the 14MZ system from say Cyberheli, he would have to buy all Rx from them or other asian shops too.
As long as you buy the Tx and Rx in the same place there should be no problem.

The same setup as with DVD region codes.

Region locking - see how well it did with DVDs - and that's a much more developed market. In to time people will find a way around the lock feature (maybe Futaba will leave the door slightly open for that). Futaba really don't care - they want to sell and they make good money on each unit sold. Their distributors are pushing in the lock direction but if Futaba can sell more G3 receivers instead of having people buy old G2 receivers to go with their systems - they will do their best to sell.
Now where did I put those $2000

Thanks for the explanations regarding "locking".

What a hoot; and all the more reason to stay with what I've got.

I wonder if The Empire requested that feature?????

Does it come with a neck strap that says "In Your Face Poor Boy!" on one side and "More Money Than Brains!" on the other?

Yes I'm kidding. My FF9 came with a strap as well, so thin it near enough chops your neck in half if you wear it

That is one radio you can not afford to leave laying around at the flying field. I would have bought one if it had a cell phone in it.

It’s more then the 14 channels.

The speed and resolution is a remarkable improvement. I think the eCCPM pilots will really like the menus for that configuration. Also, there is a great deal of power when it comes to ganging (or mixing) controls.

I was around when we went from 512 to 1024. That was one of the biggest improvements we saw. If you don’t believe it, talk to someone who had the experience or see if you can find a radio to try yourself.

While the 14MZ is clearly not for everyone, I believe the technology will improve the R/C performance for many years to come. I think most folks would be surprised of how many radios were pre sold before we in the US knew the system would be available.

Region locking

Could the region locking be because it is illegal to sell a transmitter capable of transmitting on 72Mhz in the UK?, and the same for 35Mhz in US?
