Aerobatic 3D Contest > How do you enter inverted flight?

Im a newbie at this, just did my 1st loop last week. I tried to go inverted just by up elev. to flip inverted and then neg. collective. well I must have nudged the rudder going to neg. and it flipped and started pirouetts heading straight down. I really dont know how i did it but I flew out with about nano seconds to crash time. Im a little scared to try it that way again. Should I just try to fly inverted out of a loop or what? Shoud i hold back and try some other maneuver such as a roll 1st.

Ron, ya might wanna slow down a bit to be safe. Pratcise loops and rolls first then start doing stationary rolls. When you feel comfortable with that manouver then roll into inverted and hold it there controlling altitude with neg pitch, then roll out, very safe way to go inverted. olling out is the fastest and easiest way to get out of trouble. A 1/2 loop or flip requires more finesse to enter a stable inverted position at least it did for me. Stationary flips are a good starting manouver and a roll will bail ya right out of you get confused. If you are doing this stationary then all you are concerned with is altitude (and orientation of course) but not forward flight as well especially while inverted. A sim REALLY helps too here.....................Try to do these manouvers on a calm day that helps big time too.

Ron,

There are a lot of ways to get to inverted, but a very easy and safe way to learn is to do your loop...at the top, simply let it run out instead of continuing to roll--more negative pitch and zero elevator. Then when you've held it for a bit...push out by full down collective and full nose down elevator (up stick). (Do that instead of finishing the loop.) Get positioned again and repeat. Keep holding it a little longer each time. The beauty is that the "bail out" of full down collective and full down nose is that it is pretty safe...it gains altitude and if you're going inverted with the nose to you--it pushes it away from you as well. Actually you can simply take the model 2 or so "mistakes" high, do the back flip--(like your loop but without the forward speed) and let it run/hold it and then do the bail out like before.

That's what I did, anyway, and it worked well.

Ron,

I starting the inverted flight a couple of weeks ago and I can do inverted hover now. I learnt doing the following:

I put the heli in nose in. Then I put a little of throttle to maintain altitude and apply backward cyclic stick. In the maneuver I’m going changing collective stick to have negative pitch when inverted. You can start maintaining the bird inverted one second and later more time. First times you should test it in very high altitude.

If you have a wrong or you want to go normal hover then you must apply backward cyclic again and the heli will be normal hover nose in.

Of course you should control the nose in maneuver if you want to learn in this way. Also you should practice a lot with the simu.

If you don’t master nose in you could practice inverted doing stationary rolls. You stop the bird in the middle of the roll and then try to stabilize it.

When you can do stationary inverted flight you can practice forward inverted flight. The best way for me is rolling the heli to inverted when flying and try to maintain in inverted. If you have a problem you must roll to normal flight again.

Hi Ron,

You must practice loops and roll first.
I think the best way to enter the inverted is with a half roll, I tried both, roll and flip but I feel more secure with the roll.

Practice all orientation first...then get to the good stuff! Dont go too fast like me and then have to go back and learn the basics.
But, to answer your question, I learned by putting it into a tail in hover at about 50 feet out and 40 feet up or so...not too high or too far away because you wont be able to tell what it is doing. I just flipped it nose over tail into an inverted nose in hover. That way only the ailerons are reversed and it feels similar to forward flight when the heli is pointed at you. Just dont forget that full positive collective while inverted is not a good thing.

Good Point Kurt.. but you neglected to mention flick the switch to "stunt mode" or idle up... it's bad when engine goes to idle when low stick

RCTime,
Can you auto? I'd start learning this skill first, it will save you a lot of money.

Check out the flying lessons on my site at http://www.littlerotors.com/flyinglessons/

I am practicing inverted by flipping into inverted from a nose-in hover (with the heli in stunt mode). I have been playing with the roll into inverted from a pass across the field, but have to work out the timing to get the heli stopped in front of me inverted.

some good advice-thanks

I printed out a lot of good information about aerobatics from littlerotors (thanks). Ive decided not to get ahead of my capabilities. Rolls and autos are going to be my next learning curve. Im sure that will keep me busy for awhile. I appreciate all the responses.
I had a blast today doing my loops, figure 8s and nose in.
Maybe someday I can even relax while doing it.
