I think quite a few people have done this. The Shuttle is a pretty good candidate for electric power - the motor fits quite easily and you can fit the batteries within the frame. There may be easier ways, but in a nutshell, this is what I did:

1. Cut off the clutch bell in a lathe leaving a flat disk.
2. Make a flange coupling to mate with the remaining portion of the clutch
3. Fashioned a motor mount out of sheet aluminum
4. Cleared out the area beneath the servos to provide space for the batteries.

I have tried an Astro 40, a Kontronik Tango 45-06 and a Tango 45-08. The best by far was the Tango 45-08 with a Beat 40-8-24 controller. I use 20 2400mAh NiCd cells.

Try to get the longer boom and belt, run 600 blades if your going to use the tango series. Makes a big difference!!

Tailskid.

Yup. That should be even better. Should make it fly more like a heavy Logo 20. Might need to check the gear ratio to make sure it would still be OK with the 45-08 though.

conversion

Rob,
thanks for the information. I did look up your article on ezone and called a distributor for the tango 45 08 and beat controller.
Total cost for motor and controler is more than a new voyager e
about 389$ and thats too much for me guess I will stick with the glow engine after all. I could buy several engines for what the conversion would cost.

Thanks for the information any way

Hi,

Just wanted to know what parts do I fit to get the longer tail boom etc to run 600mm blades on my shuttle. I also have an electric conversion but need to run bigger blades.

Any help is appreciated.

Hey mate, where do you fly? Not sure if I've spoken to ya before. I fly at WRCS Belrose & RFCNSW Riverwood before it closed.

Use a Sceadu boom, it's the same length as the GPH's. I was gonna shoehorn a 50 into mine but got a Skiddy instead. Much easier.

Only thing is the belt. Not sure about this one. Try a Skddy belt, looks like the same teeth pitch. The original orange belt is a pos. Kept stripping on me so upgraded to the RG's micro pitch belt & no probs at all. Or see if there's a GPH belt that'll fit.

Yours is stock all plastic? Dunno if the plastic head is strong enough for 600's.

Btw for the original post, I'd just unscrew the pinion out of the bell & fit it on the motor shaft. However this means no driven tail for autos unless you keep the clutch assembly. I'd use just the pinion to save weight & KISS.

Taipan,

So Im guessing the the Sceadu boom is the same outside diamter as the original shuttles?

Also, can you unscrew the pinion from the shuttle clutch bell? I thought it was one piece? does this mean I may be able to run a differnet size pinion on the clutch bell?

Thanks.

Yup, same dia & end notches. Pinion unscrews no prob. I wrap the bell in a rag & grip it with a pipe wrench & unscrew the rag covered pinion with pliers. Unscrews CCW as usual (as CW installation goes against torque.)

Prob is the pinion has the d-cuts for the tail pulley. Unless you get a different pinion that'll fit & machine the cuts.
