I saw a combo at century (the basic set-up kit) and I was wondering if it is a good combo. ?
http://www.centuryheli.com/products/tools/tools.html
Beside these tools, what else do I absolutely need ?

Thanks.

Pitch Gage is a must...
Hex head set.... the set on the page doesn't come with 5mm or 5.5mm nut drivers.. you WILL need both.... That 4 ended tool you wont... The ball drivers are nice.. but not required.. my fingers still hurt from installing ball links.... The pliers are nice also.. But you can wait on that one... Fly bar lock.... make something yourself out of an old antenna and an alligator clip... simple and cheap.. I bought a CNC lock that works nice... up to you.... But dont buy their balancer... better ones on the market for just a little more cash... this is my balancer... works great.. but once again.. some of the pros on here will remember the name or already own the king of balancers.. escapes me now... Hope some of his helps... good luck...
btw.. 24.95 for a "universal glowplug wrench"???? craftsman 1/4in drive ratchet with an 8mm socket works for me....

Jagboy69,
Where did you get the thing that is on your Dubro High point? I assume it's for balancing your blades.

I love century helicopters, but some of their tools are not worth the money, some are (I will comment on the ones I bought).

I bought the ball link pliers from them, ok.

I bought the blade balancer from them - junk compared to a good blade balancer. Save the money you'd pay for it and buy a Koll or a KSJ or somethin good. I just recently ordered a Koll Rotor.

I bought their pitch guage - junk. I just recently ordered a Robart pitch guage (comes with flybar thing, levels, etc.)

THeir ball link driver (the purple metal one) is very nice, as it has a hex plugin that can plug into your cordless screw driver. If you don't need that feature you can get a plastic cheap one elsewhere for $3.

Their remote glow plug adapter was initially very nice - but the method of removing the adapter from the glowplug (pullingon the wire to disengage) results in premature failure (at least mine did).

Their doodad for buildinga matched pair of control rods (that ruler that you can connect 2 rods to) is not worth it - you can buy a nice economy dial caliper for similar $ and then use it in a lot of other places as well. I didn't buy this one, already had ordered calipers.

The ball link resize tool is very nice, but I don't know how necessary it is (though I did use mine last night). Some say you can just squeze the ball links carefully w/pliers.

The bondhaus hex wrenches are great.

The glow plug 4 way wrench sucks because on the hawk IV you can't get it to the glow plug! I use a socket from one of my socket sets.

I like their piston locking tool (though some recommend you don't use a lockin tool rather that you take the carb off and stick wood or plastic items in there to jam it up). I use the piston locking tool carefully.

The flybar lock is too hard to use on a hawk with that tail control rod wrapping around the boom. Plus it is just too hard to adjust and it doesn't come with a level. I never use mine now - my new pitch guage has a flybar level.

I was going to get their die but went with another brand from tower because they had a big selection of dies that would fit their holder.

The WIHA screw/hex/nut drivers I got from them were very nice.

THeir loctite is nice and big

I bought a 24V starter from tower, along with the 12V gel cel and a hobbico tote box, power panel, fuel pump and glow plug adapter.

If you really want a complete list of everything you end up needing as a newbie let me know and I'll email it to you.

Unfortunately it goes beyond just the basic items identified when you purchase your heli

Does it work well? Seems kind of pricey.

I have no clue I just ordered a Koll Rotor Pro for $80. More pricy but apparently without debate the best blade balancer. Also does chordwise balance.

I use the highpoint to balance fab, hub, head block, etc. but will use the Koll for blades.

ncostes,
You will love the robart gauge but hate the flybar lock. The century flybar lock can't be any worse. However, The HHI flybar lock at the site you just posted is the finest available. It's expensive, but you would not regret that purchase. Also I use that gold hhi balancer in conjunction with the Koll. I use it just for the teeter totter balance part. I do this becaus it's a pain to bolt both blades onto the LIGHT flimsy koll. It feels like it's getting jerked around to much and i'm tearing it up when I try to bolt both blades on!!!! I do use the koll for the other parts of the balance job.

Speaking of balancing..... I've come up with a method of balancing that does not require directly finding the CG of either blade and only requires 1 piece of tape. It's done with a simple teeter totter balance and a triple beam scale. The weight AND cg comes out perfect even though you don't actually locate were it is! I can explain if anyone hear isn't familiar with the process. Of course there is still chord wise balance. I just blow that off!!

Yes I've read of that, you only need 2 of the three things to be true.

If you could explain it and mention the equipment you are using.

Thanks.

Okay, here's the method. First, you need to weigh both blades and find the light one. (I use an Ohaus triple beam)..... Put the light blade back on the triple beam and stick on a long piece of tape to the blade. Trim the tape so that the blade now weighs the same as the other heavier one. Take that piece of tape off and stick it out of the way. Mount the blades onto any of the many see saw type balances, the koll works too! Now, take the tape and start at one end of what was the light blade, sticking the tape to various places along the lenth until both blades sit level. Once they balance, wrap the tape at that spot. Your done! Both the weight and spanwise cg's match! the theory is that if both blades weigh the same AND both blades sit level on a see saw, then the cg's HAVE to be the same.

Even tho I have a koll, this is the method I have been using since I thought it up years ago. Less tape and much much faster that finding, marking, and matching the cg's. Give it a try!!

PS... have many of you guys use an Ohaus?

Tool list

Fou

Here's what I got for working on my Hawk...

CN2025R Threadlock+(RED) 50ml $11.95
Used on prop nut on engine, and I used it ont he set screw on the hex start adapter - it kept coming out with just plain blue loctite. You can get the $4 10ml size. You can also get it elsewhere.

Blue Loctite - get it wherever and use it on every metal to metal screw (but not on plastic or nylon lock nuts). Also on inner races of bearings to affix them to shafts where applicable.

I go this took kit - the pitch guage is ok for starters but compared to more expensive gauges it sucks. But you will be able to use it and as part of this tool kit it's ok...

CN2046 14 Piece Heli Assor ted Tool Kit. $59.95

CN2155 Piston locking tool $7.95
Use it to lock the piston so you can take the fan/clutch off the engine crankshaft. Some take the carb off and use wood or plastic to lock at that point.

CN2219 Ball driver(each) $8.95
This one is great - you'll use it to put ball links on the control rods. This one is very nice because it fits on your std hex power screwdriver. You can make a tool like this from a dowel or you can get the cheap plastic ones for $4 at LHS or tower etc.

CN2005 30-46 Size $3.95
You need this blade holder to hold you blades in place while you drive to your field.

CND421900 Velcro Wrap $5.95
I used this on one heli to protect batt & RX, but you can also just buy a big sheet of soft foam from LHS for less.

CN2222 Remote Glow Plug Adapter $9.95
You need this or else you'll be taking your canopy off and reaching under the radio tray to plug in a glow ignitor. I broke this one and got a different brand for same price from LHS/Tower Hobbies - it has a yellow wire and is much better design.

CN2019 Pocket Starter with Gauge $24.95
I wouldn't pay $25 for this one, I got it on special for $11. You can get better ones for around that price. Or you can get an adapter that plugs into your power panel if your power panel provides 1.2v output BUT the little portable ones are much handier at the field (I have both types). You'll need a charger for it (or if you have a power panel that lets you charge the glow ignitor you don't).

Tote box: whichever one you like I got the cheap hobbico one.

Hobby 12V gel cel battery 7.2AH: Should cost like $17 - powers your electric started, and is used to field charge your tx/rx battery so you can fly all day! You need a charger for this ($10 or so)

Power Panel: goes in your tote box, connects to the 12V battery, and gives output for your started, fuel pump, glow ignitor, etc.

You need a fuel pump, manual or electric. I use electric. Connects to power output on power panel.

TX neck strap - makes it easier to hold your radio.

Hex start shaft: Depends on your help - hawk needs one CN0426.

12V Electric Starter - I have a hobbico from Tower, was like $24. Needed to start your engine.

Multimeter - I had one before, used to measure voltage of many things.

Koll Rotor Pro blade balancer $80 - but worth it IMO. Balance your main and tail rotor blades. You can get cheaper, but the really cheap ones (like century) are not worth it, use a razor is just as good as the cheapies.

Dubro High Point Balancer $30 or so - for balancing your fan, hubs, head block, and anything else that rotates on a shaft.

Good pitch guage (vario, min air, robart, etc.) around $30 - not as critical, need one to set your mechanical pitch range but you'll fine tune this with curves at the field.

Glues (CA slow & fast for glueing plastic, JB Weld (5 min and regular) for high temp stuff (like your clutch liner))

Lubricants (synthetic grease, triflow, etc.).

Nice to have...

Flybar lock (the century one is hard to use) - keeps your flybar locked while you are using your pitch gauge.

CN2055 Ball link sizing tool $14.95
Lets you size tight ball links - don't use it till you know what you're doing.

CN2137 Die-cut mount $11.95
Header tank will help if you have foaming in your main fuel tank.

CN2016 Helicopter On-Board Battery Monitor $19.95
I don't use one (I can measure voltage under load with my DMM), but a lot of people do - I would actually get the unit from tower hobbies as it has a buzzer to let you kno wabout low voltage, and also has a lost model locater (say you crash somewhere in the woods, turn your TX off and the thing will start buzzing). You can also build stuff like this real cheap http://www.uoguelph.ca/~antoon/gadgets/gadgets.htm

Something to cycle your batteries - can be something cheap like "battery bug" or can be an expensive charging/cycling system (schluze ISL 6-330, supernova, alpha 4, etc.)

A field charger - this really is a must have if you want to fly more than one battery pack's worth a day. A cheap hobbico for $50 will do fine. Runs off your 12V gel cel and charges your tx/rx batts quickly at the field.

Then there's extra stuff like soldering iron, heat gun, dremel, etc. - to really do this right requires a significant investment!!! But it can be worth it.

If I've missed anything, someone will probably let you know. OH - most important, get Ray's Authoritative Helicopter Manual (available at Heliproz) for $19.99. Get the 4th edition (The 3rd is cheaper but not up to date). I wish I had gotten it when I started - would have saved me a lot of trouble. Great info.

If you're getting a Hawk IV - now is the time - century has their free gyro deal going again $219 for the kit + gyro.

Good luck and I hope this helped!

THANKS A LOT.

I already have most of the tools, I have been flying airplanes for a long time. It really helps to have somebody tells you what you need beside a hobby chop.

Thanks again.
