Tools and Field Equipment > Is my fuel pump dying?

I have a generic electric fuel pump - nothing special about it. The problem is that most times, it will not self prime. Sometimes it will just fine, but other times I have to prime it by sucking the fuel out (Nitro dont taste too good).

Is there a trick to it? I do try to leave fuel in the pipes but they drain themself after a while.

I never have to prime my pump. It is always connected to my jug, but even when I first installed it didn't have to suck fuel. It just goes.

And whenever I fill my tank, after I disconnect it from the tank I then put it in EMPTY mode and suck the fuel out of it back into the jug - so I guess pretty much every time I use it it starts dry.

Aaaah fuel pumps...theres nothing like driving half an hour to your flying field to find that your fuel pump is not working. I used to fly on weekdays on a field in the middle of nowhere (alone coz no one had the time to fly on weekdays, i was a student...so i did :-) ) and had that happen to me...after that, i always carried a spare hand crank pump with me.

First, check if your filters are clogged up. If not, perhaps your pump mechanism is not sealed properly anymore. I recommend carrying a spare hand crank in either case.

Strip it down & see if anything's worn out or come loose & repair accordingly as well as cleaning it up.

Buy a slimline pump, and a repair kit while ordering. These are the best and never quit. The repair kit includes 3 wheels and the tubing. I think it's called a peristaltic pump, rollers go over tubing. If it leaks the tube quit, and the fuel goes by gravity away from the motor.

If you're at the field and your pump dies, there is always gravity, just don't siphon that poison into your mouth, blow on the other end instead.
