Is that a serious question?

Seems a bit small, no normal carb, no cooling head.... I'd say you better mount that one on a plain

Cheers,

Rich

it is only a 40 size engine but the effective RPM range of this engine is between 24,000 and 27,000 RPM and i can put a carb on it ...

hmmm... I think it would overheat and the carb won't be much good for heli use (I've triend a OS40 in a Concept 30 once )

If you want to drag race a R50 just make it as light as possible, mount a OS50 Hyper & MP2, run 2100rpm on the head and goo!!!

Cheers,

Rich

Interesting experiment but probably a waste of time - still -

If you put an rc carb on the engine so the thing will idle and change your gear ratio to let the engine rev (bigger main gear or smaller pinion, or both) to it's power band then maybe - for very short bursts of flying only. It will probably still overheat though - give it a go!

Worts thing is the engine will blow and you will crash!

Always better to regret trying it than regret not trying it!!!!

keep us posted.

go for it , how are you going to gear the helicopter to run at the engines peak RPM while keeping it under 2000 rpm on the head , youll need custom frames to be able to use gearing from other helis that would come close to the rpm range

Keeping it cool

If you can find a way to keeping the Nelson cool, go for it. You will need a custom engine mount and any LARGE bore carb. I am guessing you'll need a gear ratio near 12:1 to keep it happy. If you run a full length pipe correctly tuned, you should be able to make in excess of 3.5HP
The biggest thing is the cooling. I doubt that Performance Specialties has a large heatsink head, but I bet Henry Nelson could make one for you for the right $$$. There is also a larger displacement, lower timing piston/sleeve (.45?) for it.
The funny thing is, I bet that Henry can easily make a strong, and durable 4HP plus heli .50 motor, at a pretty penny. But the demand for such engine does not exist. Ever heard of the DC "Chapman" engines?

Helicopters fly on $, not on lift. Fast helis fly fast on lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$...and guided by heavily caffeinated fingers.

well depents what you call a pretty penny ? I think I would pay for a 50 pushing 4 or more horsepower over 1500.00 depending on the reliability and parts support and not a one off motor
