e-Align T-REX 450-500-600 > had my first 2 flights today... seized motor...

Everything went well, just a little trimming needed and some small glitching. Not sure if it could be caused by the speed control being 2 cm next to the reciever. Anyways, on the second flight after about 5 minutes I was flying around and suddenly I lost more the 50% of the power, I tried to add a bit of collective but when I got about 1 foot off the ground the motor siezed. I dont get it. I have a Chillipepper 3600kv CP-20 with a pheonix 35 amp controller. I checked the battery voltage and it was at 11.1 volts still. I also took the motor out and turned it by hand and its very rough and relatively hard to turn.

heated up the motor and magnet came loose or cracked apart. Just a guess. Does it sound like a pepper grinder when you try to turn it by hand? should change the name from chillipepper to pepper grinder.
sorry about the motor.

This is the 2nd time I have the CP 3600 burning u. Give the JGF motor a try. I swear mine flies great and stays very cool. It must be used with a 9t or 8t pinion.

I wondering what tooth pinion you were using and was you using a heat sink on your CP3600?

yeah, mine cut/surged like that when i had the rx/esc right next to each other in the inside rear of the frame. that changed right after the maiden flight. i'll bet the surge is what roasted the pepper..

hi
its important to have the throttle curve set so the motor is not lugging at hover , it is pretty easy to have it set wrong and still be able to get in the air , i like to set the curve to zero pitch so i can spin up the motor and find where max throttle is ( the esc red light will come on to tell you you are at max ) then set the throttle curve so the red light comes on at the very top of the sticks throw ( the top can be set to just before the light comes on too ) now go back and put some pitch in you should have about 5 or 6 degree of pitch to hover , what you dont want is too much pitch at too little throttle , it will bog the motor and cause it to overheat , there are about a million ways to set up your curves and i'm sure people will jump in on this , the point im trying to get at is not a specific curve or setting to use so much as the idea that you need to set them so you are running a higher rpm at hover , hope some of this make sense

If you was using anything more than a 9 tooth pinion, then thats why it fried. 11 tooth was to much, 10 tooth not good, 9 tooth spot on, goes like a rocket ship when the pitch is setup correctly. better luck next time.

it has a 9T and a heatsink. The pitch and throttle curves were very near what I wanted it at. For normal mode throttle was 0, 50, 70, 80, 90

For idle up it was 100 90 80 90 100.

Also for normal mode my pitch was -2, 6, 10
and for idle up my pitch was -10, 0, 10.

Doesnt that sound about right?

It does not feel like a pepper grinder. It just feels really stiff to turn.

Those setups should be fine. I am using +9,0,-9, 0,85,85,85,85 governor high on the pheonix 35. My setup is the same as yours except for I have a GY401. One thing that can cause to much heat is if you have the belt to tight. You want it so you can just get the belt to touch the other side with a moderate push. Maybe you just got a bad motor, hope so coz I use the chili pepper 3600 in my Rex. I have seen a few post here with chili peppers going tight.

Sorry about your motor!!
I guess that after the first flight your motor get very hot already and 5 min is not enoght to make it cold so when you contnue the 2nd flight your motor burnt. I guess the magnatic inside your motor may be damaged and my be a magnetic coin as well.

I've been burnt Mega Power 3600KV with 11T pinion the situation was very close to you.

If you need to find a new motor for your Trex it could be the Out runner one and attach with 13T-15T pinion no need to find a high KV motor.

yea i talked to donnie, the dude that makes the motors and he said that I most likely overheated it. He gave me a 3100 to try out and man what a difference, I touched the motor after 10 minutes of flight and its barely even warm. I might add a 10t to bump up the headspeed a bit. Do most of you guys fly in idle up mode or normal mode?

I have a CP 3600 that I've printed off the return info on today. Did the same thing except I was running an 8 tooth pinion w/out a heat sink. I didn't get my 9 in on an order so I went with what I had. The motor turns but very roughly and feels almost like it has a flat spot in it. No grinding but awful close to it I'd say. I was hoping it was maybe a bearing gone bad. We will see how the return goes, hopefully quickly as I had to go with my Zooms Himax 4200 and it's pretty sad performance wise!
