Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Tail pitch ball links on HawkIV tight on pins.

I was trying to track down some stiffness (a high coefficient of static friction) in the tail rotor control system on my hawk IV.

I still have the long t/r control rod that goes to the canopy.

I tracked the stiffness down to the tail pitch ball links. If I disconnect them from the tail rotor blade grip balls, the t/r control rod and pitch plate etc. move very smoothly, there is a very low coef. of stat. friction (no need to press harder and harder until the rod actually moves).

I also moved the t/r blades by hand (changed their angle) and they are also very smooth.

The problem seems to be in the pins that hold the t/r pitch ball links together. That pin joint is very very stiff. It is the part of the assembly that was pre-assembled in the new hawks.

Any suggestions on how to loosen them up? I'm afraid if I enlarge the holes for the pins, they'll drop out during flight.

The heli still flies great, I'm just starting to get a little picky here

Thanks
Nick

tail pitch pins

Don't touch 'em! They will loosen after a few flights. They are pretty small diameter pins (2mm?) and it would VERY easy to ruin the holes. I would leave them be and fly. If they don't loosen after a few hours of time then spray some light oil on them.

I've put a gallon through this particular heli and they're still tight. I thought about oiling them but doesn't seem to be much room to do so, but I'll try.

Ah that's a good idea - may not be the pin at all! Ok thanks I'll check it.

Issue is not pin fit

Hi Guys,

The tighness you find is in not in the pin fit; it is side-to-side fit between the A-arm (going to the tail bld holder) and the tail pitch slider.

I took material off of the tail pitch slider part of the assy. And things became very sooth and free.

Do NOT try to open the 2mm holes on either part.

Hope it helps,

Problem solved

I filed down the inner parts that fit into the fork of the tail pitch ball links and now it is much smoother. Thanks for the help!

I managed to break one of the ball links trying to get the pin out but fortunately I had a spare pair because I accidentally ordered a pair with my last parts order, thinking they were the soft ball links that go on the t/r control rod

pins

Hi
That's the same fix I found worked too. (A-arm)

I found that on my IV, the hole holding the pin was too small, and filing didn't help. Take a lighter, and flame the link for about 1 second. It heats up, reforms, and is loose, and slop free... As slop free as a Hawk can be anyway... Get the tail mounted servo if you can.

Thanks, John Cadwell

Thanks for the info - the filing helped my case - have to get it so the A fork doesn't spread when you put the middle section in.

Now it is nice and smooth - I do have the tail mount for the rudder servo but haven't installed it because for my skill level it is smooth enough right now and I don't have a HH gyro to beat the rudder to death.

I may try the heat trick on a spare pair of forks and see how that does.

Thanks again for all the posts.
