Has the indicator and the mount for $30 shipped. It's not top grade quality but it works fine for what we need. BTW, top of the line is Starrett and they cost $100+

Thanks guys. $30 isn't too bad, I would like to get one whenever I build a new heli. I wouldn't really know what to do with it though. Do you guys just check everything that spins?

With a Raptor there isn't much to indicate. The only thing I would really look at is making sure your clutch is installed centered. Bigg thing is don't try this with a used clutch. You won't get a good reading with a used one.

Others might have some good ideas.

I would leave my rappy alone. I would use the indicator while building my next heli. (fury)

I just got a really nice Starrett unit that has 1/2 thou resolution at a pawnshop for $30. I ordered a magnetic base for it instead of the fancy articulated arm setup.

It is used to measure TIR, which is total indicated runout. I rarely use this tool for 30's or 50's, but it is necessary for the bigger fancier 60+ helis to get the engine hub and related components "dialed in"

I did use it to hunt down the vib problem on a Sceadu 50. Turns out the face of the engine hub was out at the OD by 4 thou, which caused the clutch shaft at the tip to be out by 15 thou +. Without this tool I could not have found the problem. I was able to rework the engine hub to get it flat. In that case I was measuring perpendicularity of the face of the hub.

This is the world of geometric tolerancing, which is really only applicable on the higher end machines, unless you are hunting for bad parts.

USE TECHNIQUE

Trying out my new indicater and really not knowing how to use it.
Here is how I did it. Is there a better way?
installed magnetic base and indicater on my metal drill press table.
clamped my Dubro prop balancer with the tail rotor shaft in it.
measured the center of shaft. .004 out in center of shaft.
no wonder a new shaft cured my vibration.
Using the Dubro prop balancer I can really only measure the centers.
What do you use for holding the shaft to be measured?

Since your at the drill press, first use your new indicator to check out the drill chuck... Chuck up a piece of round stock that you know to be tryly round... A 1/2" drill bit will do, chuck this up leaving a bit of the solid (non fluted) part exposed beneath the chuck... Set your DI up to rest on the exposed solid part of the drill bit... Turn the chuck by hand and check the runout... Hopefully it will be .001" or better... If it is OK, then just chuck up whatever (main shaft, clutch shaft, tail output, etc.) and check at various points for runout...

indicator use

Thanks bigTim
That was an excellent suggestion but im afraid my old Chicago drill press is getting tired.
I couldnt get any drill bit better than .005 and by applying some hand pressure to the 5/8th chuck I could get it to wander .004 to .005
Any other suggestions? Thanks Ron

Buy a spare pair of main shaft bearings and blocks, mount them on piece of plate glass with GOOP. You can check just about any spot on the shaft you want.
