e-Align T-REX 450-500-600 > Help requested - Align HH Gyro question

Hi folks,

I have just completed my T-Rex, and am somewhat confused about setup for the Align HH gyro. I'm familiar with non-HH gyros, such as the PG-03 which I have in other helis.

What is confusing me is that the instructions read as if there are 2 modes - a HH mode and a non-HH mode. However, channel 5 just allows remote gain adjustment, right? So how would you switch between modes? It may be that there are not 2 modes in the way I think - but I was under the impression that these gyros could be used in HH or non-HH mode. If anyone could put me straight, I'd be most grateful.

Regards,

-Iain

Your gyro will change between the modes at 50% on the gyro sens ch .That means 51% = HH mode low sens 100% high sens.
49% = non HH low sens 0% high sens.
Mine is at 83% in HH mode on my JR9X which really is 66% (33 x 2) as
50-100 only is 50 in travel but 100% for the gyro. Some radios may have 100% to both sides and 0% in the middle.

Ah! That makes sense. So I'll set up my flight mode switch to toggle from somewhere between 0 - 49% gyro gain for normal and somewhere between 51 - 100% gyro gain for Heading Hold. Thanks very much for your help. I think my Hitec Eclipse does things slightly differently to other radios, hence the confusion (other setups talked about using the gear channel...)

hey! i have the same gyro and TX, how did you guys mount your Align Gyros ( Zoom gyro)? I read to mount it so the switches on the gyro are facing the sky and the label facing forward towards the main mast, is this how to mount it? or do I mount it like I would a gy401 with the label facing the sky? I wish now that I would have ordered a GY401 or a GY240 but this little guy saves weight and if I can make it work then it will be worth it.

The label has to face sideways not upwards as in the instructions. I learned that the hard way

Mine is mounted on the right side of the frame, with the provided double-sided tape. The label is the right way up when looking at the heli. If you mount it label side up per the instructions, it won't work - found this out by experimentation.

So long as you mount it this way up it should be OK - the label can face in any direction, so long as the axis of the gyro remains parallel with the mainshaft. The reversing switch makes sure that the correct direction feedback is given to the rudder servo.

BTW - I got my normal/HH mode working per the instructions. Also found this link from Hitec: http://www.hitecrcd.com/Radios/Ecli... gyro setup.pdf

i am using the hitec tx
follow the gyro manual
you will see that the single wire lead fits to ch 5
then sw 5 will turn you from hh or non hh
then in the menu goto gyro to ajust the gain in hh mode

It is not the best of the lot. Don't expect too much out of it.

I had to lower the gain to less than 40%, and the tail would still twitch once in a while.

Also, it will not hold on backwards flight.

Jack are you still using the Align gyro?

Which tail servo, and how far out do you have the linkage hole? I found that this gyro doesn't have much delay in it, and faster moving servos with more travel (such as Align) really need to be very close (closest hole on smallest servo arm) to perform properly without wag. When its setup right and you can get 55+% gain, this gyro works VERY well. Check your servo alignment as well, it really needs to be perfectly straight without any binding from the pushrod "slide" on the horiz fin mount. I needed to flip my servo mounts around to accomplish this. Does this help at all?

In my experience this gyro is a bit harder to setup and has less tolerance for variable slop/binding/play/speed/travel than say a GY240/GY401. But at this price, light weight, and considering the performance that it does give when the setup is appropriate, I think it's a great value...

Damian,

I am using the Align servo that comes with the combo. It is the smaller micro Align servo that comes on a transparent blue case.

The servo was perfectly aligned, although I don't know what hole it was in (the helicopter is at home), but I know I used the farthest hole that would allow full travel on the tail slider without binding. If I went with the smallest arm I don't think I would have enough pitch travel...????

Since then I switched to a spare 401 I had, and now I can go all the way to 70%, with a perfect lock.

I was hoping I could use the Align gyro on a 30 size I/C scale helicopter I am building.

Should I try again with a shorter travel? How fast can you pirouette with the small arm?

Thanks everyone for your input! I did take special care to get the tail linkage as slop-free and binding free as I could. I replaced the Z-bend with a ball joint on the servo arm, and am using an HS56 servo. Today is the day I find out if my T-Rex will fly

Yay! It flies! (In non-HH mode at least)

...in "normal" mode at least. In HH mode, the servo motored the tail out to negative pitch, so I wound up with a demented figure skater, pirouetting around on the ground Evidently I've got some work to do sorting out the trim in HH mode...

This is my first CP heli, and I was a bit dubious about the wind outside my house (I wouldn't have flown my FP helis in it), but the collective is so responsive that I could adjust for sudden climbs due to wind instantly. This is fun!!

turn on your tx then your heli in hh mode
on your tx goto s.trim
look at the tail blades ajust the % + or- untill the tail blades/ slider stay still
then try your heli hh

Thanks Ron, I'll try that now. I need a break after 2 LiPos and 1 "unplanned landing", which, incredibly, only cracked a blade! New blade and I was off again... if the gyro works as well in HH mode as "normal" I'll be very pleased

It works better in HH mode, the normal mode is OK but HH is definitely the mode to run this gyro in.

Thanks Ashley,

On a whim, I picked up a little gadget later today that might make this all moot - it's called a GY401 Interestingly, I thought the normal mode of the Align was quite respectable, although I've only ever had inexpensive piezo gyros such as the PG-03 and the CSM something-or-other that came with a Hornet kit.

I'm expecting good results with the 401 from what I've heard, and by the look of it the setup notes are similar for both gyros - and now I have a little knowledge courtesy of the good people on this forum!

-Iain
