Gentlemen:

When I perform rolling circles and rolling flips, I mainly use the tail rotor command for steering. Cyclics command can also be used for the same purpose, and I know somes use it.

What is your preference?

One advantage of using the tail rotor is that the engine isn't loaded that much as when using the cyclics controls that are already being used to make the heli roll or flip.

Thanks.

I don't get to fly with good flyers (I am pretty isolated here), so I probably don't know what I am talking about. But personally, I use the tail rotor for directional control on rolling circles and tail-first rolling circles (I am just learning the tail-first ones). I do them mostly with a 30 heli and need to carefully monitor power consumption. I only use the for-aft cyclic to keep the heli moving forward (or backward). They look pretty much like circular circles.

I don't know what a "rolling flip" is, but you've got me thinking.

Thanks.

I meant by saying "rolling flips" is moving the heli in a circle while doing flips. Can be done flipping on any of the axis while rotating it in the other.

Dave:

I want to change my answer a little bit. If I am trying to do low speed tail-first rolling circles, I can use the rudder to steer the heli. If I enter the tail-first rolling circle with average to high backward speed, I can't get the heli to turn without using the for/aft cyclic while the heli is on its side. I need much more practice doing the higher speed ones (and low speed ones). See, I told you I didn't know what I was talking about.

I am just starting my rolling circles. I think it is much easier to use the cyclic to turn the heli, but then I'm a planker also. The T/R certainly helps to smooth them out though.

Life's a journey, NOT a destination.

Use both

I've found that I've done some pretty nice tight and smooth rolling circles using both the tail rotor and cyclic in conjunction. The reason for this is that you are basically turning the helicopter a little bit every 1/4 of the roll. So the inputs are smaller and it looks smoother.
