Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Black plug = too lean?

I checked a plug that has about 1 gallon of CP15 through it on a 32SXH (this is an OS#8 plug) and it is black - the coil is still looking clean but everything else is black. Is this normal or is this an indication of lean running or something else?
Thanks
Nick

Hmmmmm.

Black is usually an indication of rich and white is usually lean. What color is the coil?

Regarding the #8 glow plug, I have mine with a bit of black deposit right in the place the coil is welded to the plug base. The coil looks clean. The look is between dull and shinny. Coil isn't deformed.

What does this mean?

OS 61 WC and Muscle Pipe.

I dunno, but my Enya 3's do it too. Doesn't seem to cause any problems though.

I know why! ;O)

It is what we would call a carbon trap.If you have a rough ridge or high point within the combustion chamber it will cause carbon to be caught there. That is normal.

Great, thanks for the info.

no no no this is not nomal ... it's the fuel leaving this behind.
sig heli 15% nitro 22% oil syn is a very hard fuel to tune so is wont leave a carbon chunk on the plug that could break off and do damage.
sig heli 30% nitro 24% oil does a better job but still burns a little dirty.
CP 30% burns cleaner but the needle needs to be open more then on power master.
Power Master 30% heli is the cleanest I have used. it does'nt even die the plug purple ( thats the color of the fuel).
cp15% is good weed killer .
XP heli pro seems to be a little harsh on the bearing it also burns a little dirty.
Black is an indication that your fuel sucks (sorry but its true). a good fuel like Power Master will never leave crap inside your engine with a fat needle setting. I bet I could leave my 91 or my 61 at 2 turns out for a case or two and the plug would be clean.

You need to read just a bit better!

Look again at the previous posts. The only place that there is black carbon is at the point the coil in the glow plug is welded to the main plug body, no other place. If it had to do with fuel quality it would be everywhere.I use cool power and have the same small black spot on my OS#8's.If you have a rough spot like that in ANY combustion chamber, after a while you WILL get carbon build up at that spot.Carbon is a bi-product of burning fuel (actually burning anything) especially in heli's because we tend to run them rich. After enough running carbon build-up is inevitable.Maybe you haven't run your engines enough, Vince?

well I don't get that dirt since I have been burning power master.

I burned almost 60 gallons with my os .61 it never saw cp15 just xp15 cp30 sig15 and power master. on the cheap fuels I had to tune it lean so I could 3 to 4 gallons on a plug before the carbon chunk would be so big that the engine would not idle good. the problem with that was one click either way I would start to bake the plug or it would start growing a carbon chunk. to much hasle I have to many other things to do with a heli than needle it to death.

hmm

I'm not expert by any stretch of the imagination.

But, I fly RC airplanes alot and just started on the helis.

When I run lean or rich, you get a nice carbon gunk buildup on the glo-plug.

At the optimal mixture setting, you get this nice light coating of varnish on the plugs, even after many many many gallons. It looks almost like you dipped the plug in some orange food coloring (but the glo wire itself is clean).

The difference between rich and lean, is how the gunk looks. The gunk looks dry and crispy for a lean run. And for a overly rich setting, the gunk is kind of thicker and sticky. It's always black though, I've never seen white gunk.

I use Powermaster 10% airplane fuel . Even for the helis.

I think using a different fuel would make the gunk look different

with the power master 30% heli the gunk chunk never seems to form.
