e-Hirobo SRB Quark - Lepton - XRB Coaxial > Lama XRB stiffer blades with Photos

The new Lama XRB it great fun to use indoors. Having said that on a still day i have used it outside, even better fun. I only have a very small garden so its just perfect.

When flying the Lama you can see the baldes flex and if going from descending to ascending quickly to can make to blade touch :-(

So i now use stiffer blades.

All that i have done is use brown parcel tape to cover the blades on both side. I have kept the tips and the root free from this brown tape. The baldes work much better. They do not flex when changing direction quickly. they also track alot better.

The extra bit of tape you can see in the middle of the blade was used to balance the blades.

The problem with, if you could get them, carbon blades is that, in a crash due to the strength of the blades you would break bits on the hell.

Using the brown tape gives you quicker control and if you have a crash they will still give at the root.

So give it a go and let me know what you think, whats is going to cost a set of blades, £4.00, a bit of tape and about 15 minutes of your time. Remember to balance the blades before using them.

Have fun :-)

I tried something similar, BUT if you do hard turns, banking, etc.. it stresses the blade just on the edge of the blade grip and will snap in flight. I am going to try some differant ideas on that problem. I think since the blade is so stiff, that it starts to bend where the tape isnt, and all the load is focused on that point. Let us know how it holds up.. maybe wrapping the whole blade as you say is the ticket

my wifes cooking is so bad, the flies are sewing the holes in the screen door

The blades still flex, in the turns, i have not broken one yet. I need to do at test outside when it is not windy to get some speed up and do a tight turn.

There was a guy on ebay that had a set of CF blades for sale. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...ssPageName=WDVW
It doesn't say who made them, but they would be nice.

Why pay $45..............

Why pay $45 for a set of stiffer blades, have a go with the brown packing tape. Ok it does not look very cool but it keeps the $ in your pocket.

Merry Christmas

Hi Guys

Just a question on the tape, does adding it to the blades screw up the balance and centre or Gravity ?

You should alway balance the blades regardless if you put tape on them.

When you balance the blades put the additional tape over the CofG point of the lighter blade.

Rappy Raptor

Festive greetings!...how about using black paper or spraying the top blades black so you get the impression that it only has one set of blades?

Catch up with you soon.

Great Idea

Cant think of a tape other than masking tape that paint would stick to. I dont think masking tape would be strong enough.

You and the Family have a great time, see you down the field

Out door flying

Took the Lama out doors today. Be very careful if you do this. It only takes a very slight breeze an you loose control. Landed safely, will have to wait for a still day to test outside.

Looking forward to the next indoor fly.

I have always been told never to balance the blades, i was told if the hellie shakes and the blades are out of balance then send them back!
as all makes say on the box "balanced, ready to use"

Well it's not rocket science. They even include a blade balancing fixture with the Sky Robo. A little tape on the light side if required and you're in business. Makes no sense to send them back

Happy Holidays.

Balance your blades or not

The blades may come "ready balanced" but it is always a good idea to check them and adjust if needed.

The foam blades that i checked before putting tape on them required very little adustment. Just a small peice of tape on the lighter blade. And in that test made no differance to the flight.

Laminating Blades, makes them tougher

I did a pictorial guide showing steps for laminating the blades with strapping tape but clear packing tape works well also, here: http://runryder.com/helicopter/t148848p1/ this might help

what about a spar?

I fly foam wings as well....and they use a lexan tape to make a spar on the wing....

Using the same idea...could you not use a 1/4" piece of packing tape or the like and create a spar on the underside of the blade...since it flexes upward this would help stiffen(sp) the blade up like it does for a foam wing?

Some day I will try it...but right now I fly in my house and very mild...
