e-Align T-REX 250-450-500-600 > No battery + No Gyro = probably shouldn't fly... ?

Couldn't wait any longer to play with my T-rex, but I dont have my batteries, charger, or gyro yet... what to do? Well since it will be another few days until those items arive I decided I would toy around a little, and decided to try making a little tether for the heli to simply spin up the blades and hover in the living room - yes, I realize tethers are not a good idea, but went ahead with it anyway. Further more I have no gyro... should I try flying without one? why not :-) So Although I never got more than an inch or two above the carpet I did manage to get the heli to scoot around the floor and satisfied my cravings to fly, even if it worked terribly.

Anyway, the moral of the story is make sure to order your comps first, heli second... should have had someone take a picture while it was flying, but its too late, the picture is amusing though :-)

MarK :-)

hi
i learned to fly with a tether , i had a gyro though , and i dont think its that crazy , they sell tethers for the eco-8 , and i've heard of a bunch of others who have tried it , its important to fasten the tether to the skids at or about the cg point and not get tangled in it at liftoff , i would recomend keeping your gelcell near the edge of the room and running the teather flat on the floor to the middle of the room and tapeing it down good there then have the rest of the tether less then the length to the nearest wall , it will keep the heli from hitting the walls , let me know if you pursue it as i would be happy to help

Thanks for the info copperclad, I'm using 18awg wire right now, was going to use 16 but they didn't have it, I feel the 18 might even be a little more than is needed, since it is just hovering, not drawing more than 6 or 8 amps, the weight of the wire is really making it hard, might try 20awg... pretty fun though, great for just fooling around. I can't really do too much without the gyro though, not gonna try again until I get it :-) but it is fun, especially if you just want to do a quick test and not waste a cycle on an expensive lipo battery!
