e-Align T-REX 450-500-600 > T-REX/Chili Pepper 3600kv--10T pinion is too much, but 9T is GOOD....

I'll start this thread to log pinion combinations on my 450X with the Chili Pepper 3600kv motor in it, CC25 ESC,Align wood blades, and TP lipos. Maidened it today. Got 3 flights on it and all were average. First micro electric, but have been flying for a while...
Motor temp was 190*F after 5 minutes of flight. Batteries (3C,2100mah) were 105*F. Outside air temp 65-70*F. Pitch is not exactly known but as near as I can tell with my larger pitch gauge, I'm +10,0,-10.
With a 10Tooth pinion, I pull 13amps in hover and 16amps at full stick.
Need to get a pinion puller and try a 9T pinion and recheck before I start changing curves, etc.

9Tooth pinion works well on the bench

Just got my Super Whatt Meter and micro heli pitch gauge so my tuning can now be much more accurate.
Put a 9T pinion on and a heatsink. Verified pitch at +10,2,-9--did not need to make any changes from previous test. Top of throttle curve is still 90.
Per watt meter, I had 10.3 amps while hovering and 12.7 amps at full stick. Ran for a minute and checked motor temp at 130*F.

Increased top of throttle curve to 100. 13.0 amps at full stick but by pulling the stick back 1/8", amps dropped to 11.90 !!
Maximum efficiency for this motor is 12 amps. Will fly it later this week and post again, but this setup seems pretty good. Night and day improvement over 10T pinion

I'm new to electric as well, but from the general concensus at the field, the higher the kv the lower the torque...I am still in the testing phase so I don't know. I am happy about my current setup. Will see how it performs this weekend--flight times, temps, etc.

I have exactly the same combo as above at home waiting on assembly, but I calculated out a 10 tooth pinion. After reading your results, I'd like to get a 9 tooth, but I can't find one online in 2.3mm. Where did you order yours? I'm eager to hear how yours flies with the 9-tooth later on.

Pinions from Modefo's. I got 2 hovers tonight in the backyard. Both with partially used batteries. One flight was 7 minutes and the other was 5 minutes. Batteries were 103*F and motor was 185*F with a heatsink on it. 185*F was on the bottom of the motor. Not as hot where the heatsink is...
May try an 8T later in the week just for testing purposes. This combo here seems to be solid enough. I would expect the temps to come down a good bit in forward flight. Backyard does not allow me to fly big...

Had mine all built for a couple of weeks. Just can't decide on motor and battery. Leaning towards 3600 Chilli Pepper. They sell it at rumrunner with the 9 tooth and cooling fin as a package. I was really hoping to use a lighter pack though.
I know anything less than 2100s seem to not be enough thus far but if it is built real light and using the 3600 does anyone think performance would increase with a smaller pack. Will sacrifice flight time for the Ultimate performance setup.
Also with the 3600 Chilli Pepper, if the T REX doesn't work out, I think it is the way to go on the ZOOM or Shogun 400.
Can't wait much longer to decide though. Going nuts.

What is ideal ?

I have orderd the same set up from Mofedo . But I believe my set up comes with a 11 tooth pinion . I new to electrics and am wondering what is ideal and then I want to know why you keep putting smaller gear on to achieve what ? What temp is ideal on the motor and what amps is ideal ?

The Eco8/Logo 10 pinion gears as well as RC car 48 pitch gears will work on the Trex.

Ideally, you don't want the motor to get hot at all. The motor will get warm though and hot if you are over loading with less than ideal gearing. The battery will not last long if it gets very warm at all.

It seems as though the 9 tooth is the one for the 3600.

I remember reading someone was going to try an 8 tooth though. Let us know how that works.

Well...

I have an 8 and a 9 tooth, but the postman made my batteries dissapear

Tracking number says delivered, but no box to be found...

B-P-P has another on the way until I can resolve this with the PO inspector...

Troy is a GREAT guy, he took it upon himself to do this.

Hopefully I'll get it on Saturday and get the first flight by Sunday...

I'll report back on how an 8T works by the weekend. I have one, just need to put it on and try it. I flew the 9T tonight outside at work and it is great. Want to try the 8T in order to complete my records....

8T pinion pulls 8.90amps at full stick

I went ahead and put the 8T pinion on. As the title says, I pulled 8.9 amps at full stick as shown with my Super Whatt Meter. This is with +10,-10 on the pitch.
Unable to tach it since it is dark outside and my tach will, of course, show the frequency of the florescent lights and not my rotor blades .
I will get a chance to tach and fly either tomorrow or Saturday. Stay tuned...
If this works out well in flight, this may be the way to go. The amp draw is so low it may get some good flight times.

Derek --

I was wondering if you had gotten your Trex off the ground yet. I guess that you, like many of us are waiting for reports on what a good motor/gearing/battery combo is.

I haven't yet taken the electric plunge. but teetering ever so closely to the edge. I'm now waiting to see if I've been a good boy for Santa this year. If not, I'll have to take matters into my own hands as far as the small electrics go.

Hey Dave,

Yes exactly, it only needs motor and battery. But I'll probably do some more lightening on the frame plus all of the shafts are available in titanium for a reasonable price that really help alot. Also removed horizontal fin and will replace vertical fin with carbon. I think MJP made a great one.

Also, I wanted to mention I think the HS55s must be cheaper now. I just bought a few a couple months ago for the HellRaiser and they were $20. I called Box Kar to see if they had any more in and they had them for $16.45 now.

On the same note though, I think the best servo right now may be the Blue Bird 371. I've heard good things about it. Will have to try a couple. Has anyone compared the 55s to the 371s in flight. The specs are great. .33oz. 21 torque and .12 speed compared to 15 Torque and 17 speed on the 55s. I have seen many liking the 56s but the 371 have my interest right now. Please let us know if you have tried them on plane or heli and what you found.

On the gearing issue, it seems some have had good luck with 4 and 5 cell packs. Maybe a 4 cell 830 or 1050 Apogee pack , but we would probably be back to square one with gearing?

And with it pulling alot fewer amps, shouldn't we be able to go with a smaller pack?, which will make the biggest difference in weight over anything.

hey derekandjennys:

I have the Bluebird 371's in my T-rex, and HS-55's in my shogun. I can say without a doubt... the bluebird 371's are FAR SUPERIOR to the the HS-55's!!!!

I bought the bluebirds becasue I had one that I got in a trade, and I figure I should use it. And becasue the matching servos were only $14 each over at Helihobby.com . ($5 cheaper than the HS-55's)

The BlueBird 371's are faster, have more torque... AND THE BIGGY... they actuly have no slolp and will center !!!

When I fly my shogun, I allways have to give it a couple clicks of trim on the first flight of the day. I figured it was just the nature of a small heli... but i never have to re-trim the T-rex.

Just as an FYI... I ordered 2 more bluebird 371's three days ago to replace the cyclic servos in my shogun.

Hope this helps

I knew it! After just buying all those 55s because they were less and I was anxious to do something on the T REX. Well I'll order a couple and try the 55s first just to see how different they feel.
I was actually told about these by a JR rep. I think these will be what to put in the Tensor also. He only flies planes in contest but I think he had a Shogun. Maybe they can use other servos if they are not in a contest?

You don't have to retrim even with the stock balls, or did you replace them? I have started to remove some of the slop. Y can remove a little material on collar of the cyclic lever and snug it in a little more. One thing is even on our 90s keeping the links free and smooth is important. I imagine if anything gets tight on these it woud be much worse.

Only got about a minute of flight time on the 8T pinion and had a small mishap. Just got it all back together. Will fly again over the holiday and come to a conclusion on 8T or 9T pinion.
