I finally got started on the plug for the Hughes. The plans are hand drawn from a 1/48th scale model and about 200 pictures It will be 48 inches long from the nose to the tail wiht the tial fins reaching another 10 inches or so. The bottom of the mechanics is 10 inches from the bottom of the fuse, and the tail rotor will be just a bit sort of the actual position but i didnt want to gve up the size. I'm not sure how i'm going to do the windows but i have enough time to get that figured out before that step. Nothing else, i'll just paint the windows and front glass. I have some pics but i'm not sure how to get them to view in here.
If you know what to type, let me know so i can have it view in here without haveing a link!!!
never mind I figured it out!!!

carving the plug

OK. I've got the foam all glues and now i've got to start carving. I've never tried any of this scratch built stuff, so if you have any experience with this stuff, is there anything that I should stay away from or not do, or make sure i do??? This is going to take a long time to complete due to the fact that I'm starting school, two nights a week from 6 till 9 and the school is an hour and a half away.
so any tips or hints or just your experiences with this type of thing would help!!!

Do you have any cross sextions to work from? If you have cross sections you could them blow them up to size, figure out the spacing between them glue your foam between the cross sections, and when dry carve down to the cross section. That would give you a quick and easy rough plug to get started.

One easy way of getting cross sections if you don't have them, is to get a plastic scale model. Build the fuselage and fill it with epoxy, after hardening, layout your cross sections on the fuse. Sink the fuse into some modeling clay, and run the hole thing thru a FINE toothed bandsaw, marking each cross section from there. Take each cross section and trace it, then blow it up to your scale. Cut out some Lite Plywood templates, add the foam, and your on your way.

Wellllllllllllllllllllllll......................
\the carving has stopped for now, and yes it looks like it was snowing!!!
I'm tyring to find some blue prints of a 60 size Hughes 500. I want to compair those with the drawings that i made from my little 1/48th scale model. And from the looks of it, they are really close except for the boom length. So that is my new venture for now.
as for the carving, its just an experiment now. tyring different things on it. most of which aren't that good.

OH WELL

progress??!!

If "PRO" is the opposite of "CON",
then why do whe have the "CONGRESS" instead of "PROGRESS"???
HUMMMM?!?!?

Here is where the plug is as of tonight. I started using 50 grit sand paperin my sander and its comming off fast. I've been using my dremil too with a big bit to get the big parts off. If it makes it ok, then i might use it but I'm trying not to think that way. If i think of it as just and exparament and not the real deal, then it just might work. REVERCE PHYCOLOGY!!!

Scale Fuse

Hey JestR. Can you tell me what kind of materials you are using to make the foam layup. I want to make a scale fuse this winter for my Raptor also. But since I only have a 30 I need to make it myself. Plus I figured the experience would be great. Would you mind sharing your ideas with me. Also any literature that you might have would be great.

Thanks, Nick McDonald

Are you using the technique of covering it with fiberglass once it's finished and then dissolving the foam with acetone/gasoline or some kind of paint thinner?

how it goes....

It looks like X-mas in my room now.
What I did was use hard 2" foil sided insulation and I'm regretting a couple things. The foam shapes nice but I didnt take off the foil. Mistake #1. then i used Beats Nails to glue it together. Mistake #2!!
I'm actually using this plug as a test plug to see how it shapes. Not really planning on finishing it. Unless it relly comes out better than i think. I'm going to see what i can use to replace the foam that i took too much of. It shapes really nice with 50 grit sand paper and 100 grit too. I used the dremmil with a large router type cutter to get the bulk of the foam off.
I saw at a construction site, some Blue foam that they were using to line the foundation with. I think I'm going to try that on the next plug. Just need to find an adhesive that will sand down with the foam without making a raised point at the joint. maybe some spray glue.
I was actually going going to try an make the full blown plug and mould set up so that i could do C, D, and E models, I'm not in any rush as i am in school to be an electrician and that take up alot of time PLUS the two year old runnin around makes it hard. But anyway, thats where it stands!!!
