e-Ikarus Piccolo-Eco 8/16 > Need help fixing problems on Eco 8.

Im kinda of a newbie to helis and im having some trouble with my Eco 8. I went to run my third pack through my heli today and was practicing with the tail controls. When I spun up and went to give the tail right pitch about 70% of the way, it started spinning around uncontrolably. I gave it full pitch in the oposit direction and when nothing worked I decreased throttle and stopped it. Everything seems to work just fine, the gyro does a great job at holding the tail steady. But I cant figure out why it spins uncontrolably like that.

My second problem is when my battery starts to the rotor can spin at about 500 RPMs or so all power to the reciever is lost. Its not very dangerous since the heli cant go anywhere or do anything and it dies after about 15 seconds but it s something im concerned about. But it might have something to do with me using 6 cells.

Heres my set up:
-Eco 8 heli
-Ikaraus Heli 4000 ESC w/BEC
-Traxxas 20t silver can motor
-6 cell SC2600/GP3300 batts
-JR Quattro tx w/R610M reciever
-HS-81s all around
-JR G400T Gyro

Upgrades
-home made fram brace
-CF servo boom mount
-all else is stock

All help would be greatly appreciated. And also I know my power system seems very week but thats because I want it to be, my last heli(corona) would take of spontaniously and I wanted to make sure it didnt happen again with this one. And yes i know I should get a new radio but im in college and cant afford things like that right now.

I had the same tail problem you seem to have. You need to check all of your pulleys. they are injection molded fiberglass. I have gone through 3 of them. If you TRs hit the ground, the pulley will slide off of the flat spot on the tail shaft. Loosen the nut, realign it, and tighten it again. To check for this problem, hold the TR pulley and try to spin the TR blade yoke (they call it something else--its the part that the blade grips screw into). If it spins, bad. If it does not spin, try the pulley at the other end. Hold that pulley and move the main gear. It should not move.

The second time I encountered this problem, i had had a few light ground strikes with the TR blades. Less than 5% of the total blade was worn away. This was enough to cause a loss of TR response.

Look at a post of mine called lack of TR response from a month or so ago. RCAddict123 gave an incredible step by step of what i just tried to describe.

As for the electrical problem, I have no idea.

good luck

What pinion are you using? I flew mine with the stock sport motor for about 2 weeks doing test flights with some 6 cell packs I had laying around. (2300 packs) I never encountered any problems. I used the 11 tooth pinion on mine. I did, however, have a problem with vertical climb. The heli would only get up about eye level and no further. I was using a jeti 300 speed controller at the time, with ccpm setup on a Futaba t6xh radio and a helimax gyro. It also has hitec hs85's. I then switched to 10 cells and even then had no problems with stock gearing. I am guessing your traxxas motor is a bit much for your battery with the pinion you are running. As for the tail problem, I am not sure. Hope this helps some. Good luck and keep at it. When she works right, she will be a dream to fly!

ok well I feel stupid. TR problem was cause by my gyro being switched in reverse

Thanks for all the help but I still cant seem to get the BEC thing fixed, not a big deal tho, need to discharge the batts somehow anyways.

Also I tried stepping up to a Reedy Team Fantom Stock motor(about 20k RPMs @5v) with a 7 cell pack and the thing glitched like crazy. I almost couldnt stop the heli from moven around had to shut off my tx and hope for the best. This wasnt using a Diode but with the preinstalled capacitors(RC car style). Im kinda afraid to install a diode and try it again. I dont want the thing to potentially injure me like my corona.

Are you using the same receiver you had in the corona? After any major crash, it should be checked out by the manufacturer. Try another receiver or send that one back to JR. Just for piece of mind and you will eliminate another variable. How is the receiver attached to the heli and where? I see you have a cf servo boom mount. Is the antenna wire anywhere near or touching it? From my car days and cf chassis, we had a heck of time with glitching if the receiver was remotely close. Food for thought! The diode on the motor... there are those that use them and SWEAR by them and then there are those that don't. I personally don't use them as I have had NO problems with them or without. As long as you have the 3 capacitors, you shouldn't have any problems. How old is the motor? What condition are the brushes in? Brushes dancing around on the commutator is another cause of glitching. Glad you found the problem with the tail. Now if we can eliminate those pesky glitches....

well i did have the same problem with my corona except it wasnt a little glitch, it was WOT and the heli crashed into the roof of my garage. But I definatly know its caused by the motor this time because with the silver can my radio works flawless, but with a different motor it works not so well. I have my reciever right underneath the tail boom mounts, and I keep the reciever wire away from the CF mount. So that all checks out. Also I have tried different motors, all with less than 10 packs through them and brushes are fine. They all kind of have had the same result.

Try installing a seperate reciever pack, i know the eco struggles with all up weight, but you should be able to do some shallow hovering, this would rule out a problem with the bec circuit, as with all electric heli's ensure the reciever and antenna are as far away from speed controller as possible, also i tried various ex car motors on mine with no success, i believe the way the eco is designed it runs the motor counterclockwise, hence the ikarus motors work ok, as this is the opposite to the norm in rc cars, it may be why they never work as well,
i got fed up with changing brushes and switched to brushless, never looked back....................

im tempted to say that there may be a shortage of power to the reciever.

if you up the size of your pack to 8 cells just drop the headspeed and pitch a bit gradually upp the headspeed to 75% mid stick as you get braver with the heli (or even at the top of the stick till you get more confident) then slowly up the pitch curve till you get a decent climb that you can handle.

try a 540 class (27 turn) motor with 10t pinion gives longer flight time and also makes it a little more dosile.

Im currently using a Nosram Tornado SS3 motor (23 turn) and it gives excellent performance with the 8 cells (panasonic 3000mAh NI-MH in solderless powertube) I run.

hope this helps a little and good luck.
