The field where I fly the grass is cut rather long so I tried to think of a good platform to take off from so I used a Large shallow kitchen drawer that I used from my now gutted kitchen. Paint the bottom blaze orange and presto it works great.

PAD

When I go camping in the desert, it is ALL dirt so to keep the helis clean I take a 12 foot by 12 foot piece of carpet. Roll it out add 8 stakes and presto heliport. I have used a small piece of ply wood for a pad in tall grass.

A piece of heavy carpet works well....just make sure that your wife says its OK before you cut out the middle of your living room.

Glad to read this ! Just took of training gear and hovered, working on touch and go's. Now as I look at my postflight cleanup, my raptor looks like a dirty lawnmower !

Take off pad

I like the drawer to take off from not only to keep the heli from hitting the grass but it helps me fine tune my landings by trying to land back on it.

Take Off Pad???

blvbuzzard, do you marinate those stakes before you get to the flying site, or while you are flying? And do you prefer charcoal or gas???

Take off pad-as in quick release rotor blades?

The kitchen drawer is great until...... you pull back to hard on a aproach, or overshoot the pad. Hitting the tail rotor, or anything on the side of a wooden drawer will hurt.

I use a 3'X4' rubber door matt. I like it because it rolls up small. It is heavy enough that you do not have to stake it down. It is easy to clean. and the price was right. I have one stashed at my favorite flying site. It also works well to keep you out of the grass when you are not using it as a take off pad. (all you smokers out there just be sure flip it over before you sit on it or you will get coverd with oil)

If you are going to use a drawer, be sure that it is the "bottom" drawer. If not you will have crap dropping off the bottom of your "take off pad" into the drawer below it.

I can hear it now....."Honey is that coolpower spots I see on our silverware, and why is there a rainbow film swirling on the surface of my tea?"

Take off pad

Don't have to worry about that, all of the cabinets that go with it have been tossed out.

Yummy Stakes.

These stakes are tough as nails, but they have some tender plastic tops on them. If you do not use a merinaid you can not chew them.

Yes I ONLY use Charcoal

There is nothing better tthen flying helicopters, planes all day and then having a good dinner around the camp fire.

Heli Landing Pad

I just finished making a heli landing pad. It cost my club less than $19.00 in material, and about 3 hours of my time. I used a 18"X18"X2" Stone material I found at Home Depot it cost $3.43 and I sealed it with a white latex dry/leak sealer, since it will be in the ground all the time. Then I used a piece of construction paper for my cut out. After that I just sprayed in fluorescent red paint. Very easy to make and cheep.
