People have been putting turbos on 2 stroke snowmobiles for years now with great horse power increases. Why can't it happen in the rc world?

Airfoil - what snowmobiles? We want details.

Alistair, I am beginning to think you are not going to tell us how the two stroke turbo system works….

Furious, don't be sorry, a good discussion here. Much better than the usual " I have a 90 powered Whiz-Nut, where should I set my needles so I can do Kaos with training gear?" Daz59, I thought the same , on page one!

^ lol exactly

From what I have heard they don't really do anything for our engines anyway

Airfoil, good question. A turbocharger is an exhaust driven compressor. We use much of our fuel and oil content, for cooling . A turbo would not tolerate what exits our mufflers as waste. Snowmobiles are typically water cooled. Snowmobiles also have valves that shut the intake off from the crankcase. Snowmobiles also don't have to fly, so weight is not an issue.

i will..... it's just i pm'd it to someone, and i am lazy. i don't want to type that much... i have to fix the fooking heli, and i have to play with the new baby bird (congo african gray).

i will do it tonight or just post the pm.

it's not just a turbine... then here ya go slap it on there. it changes a lot of things. it's pretty well engineered.

i think.... lol it's neat.

i know what it is... lol it's mine... lol

there was a question 'bout turbines, and how they work. that's why i put that up. you can see it's intake and exhaust connections... more or less... lol

it does fly. you hit the crest at 220km/h and you'll certainly fly.

that one certainly gives you a kick

if you want to understand why turbochargers and superchargers won't work on two stroke engines, take a look at these articles:

how two stroke engines work:
http://science.howstuffworks.com/two-stroke2.htm

how turbochargers work:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm

as you can see from the first page, the intake and exhaust ports are open at the same time in a two stroke. therefore, it is impossible to compress the air entering the cylinder, which is what turbos and superchargers are for.

for comparision, look at how a four stroke engine works:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine4.htm

you can see that the exhaust value is closed during the intake stroke, allowing the incoming air to be compressed by a turbo or supercharger. hope that helps.

just for the sake of argument.....which there is a lot of

what if.......you took a little mini turbine fan, and instead of having it all engineered into the engine, why not have it externally blow air into the already exsisting carb opening. that way it would only take in the air when it needs it, and at the same time it will enter just that much faster.
i'm not sure how easy that is to understand what i'm thinking of.

basically leave the engine alone...and have a turbine blow air straight into the opening of the carb....

Furious Vigor, thats how turbos work, but it wont work on a two stroke.

Wouldn't the turbo lag cause more of a problem than help. It would seem that a turbo would just provide extra head speed at high rpm and load the pipe at low rpm.

Maybe a blower would do the trick.

Alistair,...still waiting for that explanation of how this thing ....works, or are you just blowing hot air?
