e-Align T-REX 450-500-600 > T-rex or Shogun?

I am interested in purchasing a T-rex 450X or a Shogun 400 but cannot decide which is the best way to go. I do not fly 3D [yet] and am looking for longevity of flight. Any opinions on which heli would provide the longest flying times is greatly appreciated.

Also, if flying weight, motor, battery, and weight combinations are posted for either heli I can make some calculations as to flight times.

Thanks!

PS, is it Trex or T-rex?

The Zoom will give you the longest fly times for two reasons:

1: the Zoom is lighter

2: the Zoom uses a more efficient shaft driven tail whereas belt uses up 5-10% just on friction

530g-all up weight / mine is 567g but I have mad mods and 2100mah battery with flight time of 15 min.

Hover,

I cannot give you any hard/fast facts for either one. But I have owned both and I can give you my opinion (which is what you asked for)

Anyhow, I sold my shogun after I received my Trex......enough said?

From what I have seen, the quality of the Trex is secnod to none, and aside from the canopy, it is an EXACT copy of a Sceadu Evo! Rotor head, counter gear, driven tail......everything! And I love my Scoob!

Another thing I like about the Rex is that it actually has a place to mount a gyro! Something that the Shogun is lacking. You don't need to do a belt drive upgrade or worry about stripping gears, it is already belt drive....just like the Sceadu. The main frame is also much more durable on the Rex, just look at a pic of it and you will see...........on the down side that makes it a little heavier.

Th Rex also comes with 2 sets of blades....one wood (very good) and one plastic (ok, but indestructible)......it also comes with an assortment of small spare parts, and the tools to assemble it, as well as locktite!

One downside of the Rex, is that it is still very new, and it does not come with a motor, but Algin has recently started selling a BL motor for it that only costs $36.00! The kit comes with 3 different pinions that will fit the new BL motor! Yet, there is not a lot of info out there on how to make it into an extreme 3D machine......but I would say just give it a few weeks on that and we will all know exactly what setup to use and where to get the upgrades (I really don't think it will need any!)

So anyhow, you asked for an opinion, and there is mine, take it for what it is worth.............I would suggest the Trex.

Have fun!

Sceadu Flyer, I couldnt have said it better myself!! I love my Trex but I am going to keep my shogun for awhile just because parts are easyer to get right now. I am shure that will change in a couple of weeks though.
My vote is the Trex with a 4200 and TP2100 you should get at least 12-18 mins. with it set up right.

OK, that's Trex - 2; Shogun - 1

With that I will start by thanking you for your replies and ask some more questions.

The comments for the Shogun make sense, but how much lighter is it? Also, has anybody else experienced the lack of efficiency due to a belt driven tail? That's the first I have heard of that.

motorbikemike,

You state that I should get 12-18 mins with the Trex running TP 2100's and 4200. Is this a guess or actual experience?

Also, since you own both, is there any way you can give me a direct (or almost direct) comparison on flight times between the Trex and Shogun with the same (or similar) configurations? Are we taliking 1-2 minutes difference in flying times or 5+ minutes?

Thanks

You have this thread in the T-rex section. Don't you think your answers are going to be biased? Start one in the Zoom forum too and see what kind of respnse you recieve.

I couldnt make up my mind at first, but with all the Zoom owners shelling out 80 bux for a belt upgrade, or dropping 40-50 on gears, when I saw the REX had belt drive... my mind was made up.

And for the weight, nothing a carbon frame wouldnt cure hint hint, any guys interested? im working out the details in a CAD app and have a machine shop already on standby to cut the frames when the instructions are ready.

I am looking for the same information, what weight, and flying time on each. I've been doing a bit of research and am looking for the same info to make a decision. Other than KRAZYKEV, nobody has responded with flight weight and times.

With that said, please provide actual flight weight and times for T-Rex and/or Shogun.

Thanks

Ummm,
I know no one has brought this up and its not a choice, but you might want to look into a Hornet II,,,I've heard the Zoom is a good heli but takes quite a bit of money to get it working right, especially with the whole tail situation, and i've heard the Zoom looks like a toy compared to the Hornet II, which does outSTANDING 3d.

Hover_X, with the 2100 pack you will be able to fly 12 mins for shure. It all depends on the motor you use. I think I can push mine to 15 min but I just cant get myself to do it. I am not ready for an auto yet I land at 10 min now and that seems to work good for me. The batts are just warm and the motor with a heat sink in warm also. I get two 8 min flights with my shogun because the motor gets hot. I need to get a heat sink for it. My shogun is lighter and has better blades so it is going to fly longer but the Rex is just better in wind and over all flight performance if you ask me.

3dHornet2 ,
I have heard some good things about the H2 but after building 3 of the first Hornets and spending money every time I took the little bird up I will never buy one again. I wish I did not have such a bad taste from the first ones because they do look COOL! I also will never buy a heli that has to use CA to hold it together, just my opinion.

try MaxiR

Hi,

I am flying micro-heli MaxiR, it is CCPM, shaft driven micro-e-heli.

It is RTF 450g using my heavy 2200mAh 10C 142g 3S1P = 22mins of flying time (340-400g only using small kokams640mAh/15C or e-tech 1200 10C so it is great 3D performer - better than Hornet2 in my opinion and no tunings are essential for 3D-style flying except 3d addles !)

Look at elektromodely.com for details/photos of the kit. It is not such cheap than others because it is made in EU not far east.
