e-Miniature Aircraft Furion - Razor - Ion-X > When to stop flying Ion?

I have 8000 mah Thunder Power LiPo packs on my Ion with the stock motor and controller. I asked Thunder Power today at what point should I stop flying in order to avoid damaging the batteries. They said the only way is to set the controller to auto shutdown at no less than 3 volts per cell. My question is, can the Hacker controller be set for auto shutdown?

Thanks,

- Bill

If you have the 77-O-heli control, yes it can be set for a voltage threshold at which point it just shuts off and leaves you to auto down. A better way is to follow the instructions on page 54 of the Ion-X manual where it details how to determine a safe fly time.

Flying Time

Does the Orbit Microlader Pro give you the information needed to calculate the flying time?

In case anyone else is wanting to have the controller shut down at a preset voltage, here is what Hacker said:

Bill,

You will need the Master Prog Box in order to do that operation. The Prog Box also lets you make many more adjustments to your speed control so it can better accommodate your application. They run $40.00 plus $10.00 shipping.

Thank you,

What I've done is a trial method.

I started by flying for 5 minutes.
Stopped and checked the voltage.
Then flew some more, never more than 8-9 min in total.

I would charge the batteries and see how many Mhs they took during each charge. Usually 3000-4000mh

I did this each time, up until I was getting about 10-11 min on flying time.
I set my radio for 10 min warning

I never let the batterys go below 18.5 V ( thats 3.7v/cell) .
This method has been successful for me.

Gravity Works...no, the other left. ok,ok

For the Ion when you running TWO 8000s, at a cost of over $700, this can be risky.

"why not fly till power drops off and then land."

With the Ion-X and it's relatively high current demand, If you are still flying hard when the battery gets down towards the end of it's cycle you run the risk of degrading it through over heating. The best way to keep a Lipo battery happy is to stay away from the limits of the battery. Don't always try to use every last mAHr the battery has. Lithiums are not like roundcells, you do not have to fully discharge them in order to avoid a memory effect...there simply is no memory effect.

The Hacker Prog box is well worth the $40. It gives the user a lot to work with. Yup, it's another expense, but one that actually gets you something as opposed to that last chrome plated whiz-bang that didn't do squat.

Thanks for the offer of the loaner, Dave, but I'm just going to buy one.

How do you tell which version of the HackerMaster is the one that lets you use the program box???

From what I understand, Only the newest released ESC can use the box.

Also,
Have any of you tried the Ion with the Kontronik Jazz 55-10-32. I saw that Tower is now selling them, and with the discount thay are giving, I decided to buy one. I'm gonna try it anyway but I was wondering if anybody has already done so. I've got a Kontronik Jazz 60-10-24 in my electric Caliber .30 conversion and I really like it.

Thanks,
Mike

The Hacker controls that use the Prog box are the -O- controls. The earlier 77-3P controls can only be programmed through the throttle stick. If your control is a 77-O-heli control, it can be programmed through the prog box.

Optech,

I would be cautious about using a Jazz 55 on an Ion depending on your flying style. If you're hovering around or doing gentle aeros you'll probably be OK. If you're planning on aggressive aeros/3D, the Jazz may not be able to handle the current peaks. On my own Ion-X, 3D regularly generates current peaks in the 80-90A range according to my Eagle Tree FDR
