Anybody know of a nice replacement canopy for the Hawk 4? The one that came with it is pretty ugly.

Canopy

I've seen that Century has a new canopy for the Hawk IV that has fairing on the lower sides. These look pretty good. These were originally on the Ravens, they looked good and are now being used on the Hawk IV.

Canopy

The stock canopy (HI3130B -$29.95) and windshield (H13133A - $9.95) that comes in the Raven 30 & 50, HawkSE and Falcon SE is a drop on fit to any Hawk. They are relatively inexpensive and look very good (One of our locals have even fit it to a TSK MyStar 46).

Are there any cheaper canopies - $40 for a canopy is kind of high on a $219 bird.

The problem is I drilled my holes in the wrong spots on one canopy couldn't find any guides and the directions in the manual are kind of skimpy.

It fits now but it is unnecessarily difficult to get on.

Alternately, to "undo" the holes (I made them big enough for the grommets and have the grommets installed) - could I just glue some spare plastic on? Basically the holes I drilled are very close to where it seems they should be.

Also for my 2nd hawk, I haven't drilled the canopy (to avoid the same problem). Any tips on how to set the holes in the right place?

Thanks
Nick

Fitting the Hawk canopy.

Yes, Century has two styles of canopy and I agree that the one supplied in the Hawk IV kits is rather unattractive. This procedure works for both canopy styles.

Using the measurements supplied in the manual for the upper left and right sides and mark and make these cutouts, I believe 14mm from the rear edge and the bottom edge. Remove the windshield if you have already installed it. It have used two methods to attach the inside mount, on the canopy.

#1. Cut out two 1/4" (6mm) squares of double sided tape and attach to the inside mount on the two sides that will eventually contact the inside of the canopy. Look at the hook and notice that there is a chamfer on one side, this should be facing backwards. Pull the backing on the tape and position the inside mount on top of the hook and slide the canopy and attach the upper thumb screws without contacting the inside mount. Press and hold the inside mount in place and press the canopy against it to stick the inside mount to the canopy. Presto, perfect location, but be careful when removing the canopy.

#2. After mounting several canopies, I got lazy and repeated the same procedure but instead of using the double sided tape, just took a black "sharpie" marker and made tick marks along the front edge of the inside mount where the holes go through. Again press the canopy against the inside mount and make similar tick marks on the left, right along the centerline of the inside mount, up to the edge of the mount. I also made matching marks on the inside of the canopy that align to the marks on the inside mount. Remove the inside mount, connect the lines and drill the holes. Works everytime. After drilling us rubbing alcohol, Fantastic cleaner or raw fuel to remove the "sharpie" marks.

If you have a raven, I converted my Hawk, you can move the canopy mounts to the rear holes on the upper main shaft bearing. By doing this the holes in the canopy are much better proportioned, almost centered in the sides. The canopy is physically moved forward around 1" (25mm) and still fits very well. I tried this on the Hawk IV canopy but extra width tends to force the sides of the canopy outwards, curving the bottom slightly. It didn't look horrible, but I switched the the newer canopy and it fit like a dream.

HI3130A Canopy Hawk IV $29.95
HI3130B Canopy Raven 30/50, Hawk/Falcon SEVII $29.95
HI3133 Windshield for HI3130A $9.95
HI3133A Windshield for HI3130B $9.95

Andrew,
Thanks for posting the info.
I still don't understand #1 above.
I have the quick mounts on.
Let's say I put the original mounts onto the frame. You're saying to put dbl sided tape on the mounts (the hex metal things stuck into the frame), then put the canopy on (hook it in the front) and then just see where the canopy would fit best - then press and the tape sticks to the canopy inside?
That would make sense - good idea!

Or did I go awry?

I doesn't matter whether you have the hex mounts and the thumb screws or the quick mounts and the rubber gromments.

1. Drill the side holes at the top of the canopy as per in the manual and install the rubber grommets.
2. The goal is to find the exact position for the inside mount (black plastic piece that is attached inside the bottom of the canopy with two M3x6 Washer Head Screws).
3. Atttached the canopy only by the upper grommets. Lift the front of the canopy until it touches the plastic hook.
4. Lay the inside mount on top of the hook and mark the location. Simply draw around the part.
5. Remove the canopy, and mark the center holes for the inside mount, drill and attach.

That's it, simple and clean.

Ah - ok that's the reverse of what i did. I thought I saw marks or dimples where the front mount should go and moved 8mm, so I drilled that 1st and then tried to do the holes in the back.

I'll try this other method on my 2nd canopy.

Thanks again,
Nick

BTW - about time we got some century field reps on here oldfart (Phil) has been doing all the work around here
