Radio - Servo - Gyro - Gov - Batt > Will Futaba 9Z work w/airtronics RX & servos?

Just thinking long term - after a day at the field sharing a channel w/3 other guys, synthesized frequency is awful tempting. Will the 9Z TX work with Airtronics RX and servos?

I read the thread about Futaba & JR servos...

Also - are there any other radios w/synthesized frequency? That's really the only appeal of the 9Z for me right now, given my novice piloting skill.

Thanks

No, Futaba radios use a negative shift system. Airtronics and JR us a positive shift system. You can however use Futaba with all Hitec stuff (since Hitec uses negative shift as well).

As for servos and gyros, you can use a Futaba radio with JR, Airtronics, Hitec and just about anything else out there. The only catch is that on the older style Airtronics, you will need to use an adapter plug (since the old Airtronics has the positive and negative wires in different locations).

As of now (to my knowledge), only the 9Z and the Hitec 7 channel can change frequencies. Futaba's 9Z is changed from the computer screen.

The Hitec setup is a module based system. But instead of going into the computers programming and changinge the frequency, you remove the "Spectra Module" and use a small screw driver to change frequencies. You then plug the module back into radio and you are all set.

The Hitec Spectra Module will also work with Futaba FM/PCM radios that use the module system (like the 5UAP, 7UHP, 8UHF, 9CH, etc.). It will not work with the 9Z radio.

Steve
Thanks for the informative reply.

It's good to know I can reuse the servos at least (if I haven't crashed them by the time I'm ready to put more money in). I am aware of the Old Airtronics / New Z connector deal.

And it's even better to know the trick about the spectra module. I didn't know there was another synthesized freq. radio out there or that you could plug a synthesized tx module into any of the futaba tx that use modules!

So does that mean you can get a 9CHP with a futaba synthesized module ala 9Z or do you have to get the spectra module and use it in the 9CHP?

Thanks

No, you can not buy a Futaba 9C with a Hitec Spectra module. You need to buy a 9C and remove the Futaba TX module that comes with the 9C. Then buy a Hitec Spectra TX module and put it in the 9C.

Now officially - per Hitec and Futaba, "it wont work". However, many people I know have been using the Spectra Module for years in Futaba radios...

And according to the FCC its highly illegal !!!

The Hitec Spectra module in a Futaba radio was not certified as a "system" even though the module is the entire RF section and the only thing transmitting??? However, the entire transmitter is what gets certified, not the individual pieces. Thats why when the Spectra first came out, Hitec made a version specifiaclly for the Futaba transmitter that people could buy. It dissappeared overnight.

I went round and round on with people on this when I wanted to modify my old ACE Micropro 8000 computer radio with the Spectra Module. But, the law is the law. There is probably nobody that will ever come up to you and say anything but you would be wise to never use the radio at a sanctioned event or a club field. If you were to injure someone with an out of control aircraft, and they found out the transmitter was an illegal conglomeration, and there will be an investigation....... whooooo boy you better get the vasaline ready. Not only will some lawyer have a hold of you but the club or sanctioning body will most likely lose as well. Thats why when I'm working the impound, I ALWAYS do a saftey inspection on the radios that come in. Unfortunately some guys working impounds have no clue what to look for.

Thanks for the info. I don't want to break the law or violate AMA rules. Anyway, the eclipse tx w/spectra seems like a good way to break into synth tx at a relatively low cost. I know a couple guys at our field that are happy with their eclipse.

For the futaba route -I had understood only the 9Z worked with the synth module - can you get the futaba synth module for the 9CHP or would it be illegal as well?

Thanks

Thanks to all for the replies, this was all very good info. I'm leaning towards a hitec eclipse tx w/spectra module. Their RX crystals are inexpensive so I may go with one of their RX and buy several crystals.

thanks again for the input.
