I am ready to test my Ion, but have a question about the speed control. With all of my other speed controls, when using a separate battery pack for the receiver and servos, it is necessary to disconnect the power lead. Is this necessary with the controller shipped with the Ion?

no, this ESC has no BEC so you don't need to remove the power lead.
