I want to create a video and I'm stuck at the very beginning

I have a Sony TRV 550 handy cam and I haven't got the slightest clue on how to transfer the video to my computer ....

Can anyone tell me how to do this ?

I guess my question goes to

a) Which cable should I buy to transfer the video from my video cam to my computer

b) Does the computer need any special device other than the "normal" stuff (USB, Serial, Parallel and an ILink thing which I don't even know if it works or not) ?

c) Once the handycam is connected to the computer, what do I need to do to convert the X video format to mpeg, avi, mov or some world-readable format ?

I dont know too much about the Sony TRV 550. So let me ask. Is it a digital video recorder? If it is, you should be able to download your video with the included firewire cable. You can then edit your movie and save it in AVI, Mpeg or what ever format you want...

If it is an older, "normal" type video camera, you will have to tranfer your recording onto the computer with a video capture card. If you dont want to open your computer, you can use a USB type video capture device too. Most cards and USB capture devices include software.

Hey Steve,

I was starting to think this was just another dead thread !!

My video cam is digital ... It did come with some USB cable, but it's purpose is for transferring Memory Stick pictures to the computer (JPEG), not video.

I haven't found any possible way to transfer the video except for using a special cable, which obviously I don't know the product code, name nor anything. My local Sony dealer didn't have a clue

I guess I have nothing left to try except give Sony Shop a call and see what they have to say about this.

Hi Steve,

I am looking at the same thing at the moment.

I have found that Dazzle, which can be found at www.dazzle.com have a product which can be ordered online called the DV Creator 80.

This is a unit that connects to the computer via a USB connection and allows you to connect any form of moving picture caputre device, such as TV, domestic video and camcorders etc. to your computer.

This device also comes with some video editing software that allows edtiting of the video, capture and issolation of still images, in otherwords creating photographs from video feeds and the addition and mixing of audio, either from the original video caputre device or through the combination of audio CD's via MP3 music formats I believe.

The editing software by the looks of it (I don't yet have one) is a little basic, but it will provide all the facilities you will need to film a heli flying (or anything else) and adding some music to the finished video before making it available on the web for others to view.

I hope this is of use to you.

Cheers,

Peter.

I have a Sony TRV-20, and the way to transfer the video to the computer is via the firewire cable. You need to install a firewire card in your computer, and then you can run the software that came with your Sony, or XP has an application within it that allows video generation.

Ok, I figured out what I need to do such thing.

I have winXP with a Sound Blaster Audigy drive, so that takes care of the IEEE 1394 plug (Firmware card).

All I need to buy is a 6 to 4 1394 cable (sold by sony, creative labs, radio shack, etc ...) and just plug everything up in the computer.

It appears to be much simpler than what I thought it'd be ...
