I'm trying to incorperate my helicopter into my extended essay which is a 4000 word essay that must be done as part of my ib course. I was wondering if anyone had and methods for accurately checking rpm besides just motor, battery calculations etc. Also, if anyone has any good ideas on how i could perform a test on any part of my heli, i'd love some suggestions, by the way i have chosen physics, so preferably no history ideas.
Thanks everyone, Josh

Need to know more to be able to help you.

OK, so it is electric and small. The easiest way is to use a tach like the Model Avionics tach, it works with a fast turning cylinder and use the strobe principle to measure rotor RPM. Check the web-site for more info.
Second trick you could do is to measure the frequency going into the brushless motor but this requires on board electronics.

Not sure if you want to measure rotor rpm in flight or on the bench. If you want to go fancier you could measure the rotor rpm on board and wireless send it back to you for read-out. Simple electronics are available build it but it will get heavy and I am not sure if it still would fly with all this stuff on board. As mentioned earlier by jb_turner, a tach is the easiest way.
