Blades, Night Flying and Painting > Blade Flutter?

What is the principle cause of flutter.Just had it occur on a 4 blade head I am trying to set up.Controlling the pitch with the control arm on the front of the blade holder, should I use a rearward position? I figure there is not enough authority over the blade, with all the weight very forward in the chord of the blade.

Peter,

I get a similar effect with a home made 5-blade head. It usually happens when I turn reasonably quickly, almost as if a blade 'digs in'. I made it with fairly soft damping at the blade holders and am thinking this might be the cause. I plan to rebuild with a solid head to see what effect that will have but it wont be for a month or so.

From what I understand, blade flutter is caused by the tips of the blades flexing up to a higher angle of attack when stressed and causing the tips of the blades to stall, the flutter sound is the result of the stalling tips.

Thanks Chris,

I took Peters query to mean the effect I get which is the blades going fairly violently out of track for a very short time.

Peter,

I see lots of good suggestions on your post in the scale forum but you didn't say what was the cause / fix of your problem.

I originally was using the pitch control arm on the leading edge, directly in line with all the blade weights.I simply switched the blade holders over, reversed the swashplate movement (quite simple on the 9Z).This I believe has given more leverage to the control arm,as the forward C of G on the blades,is now a greater distance to the pitch control ball.(Hope I'm explaining this o.k)
The greater distance provides a greater force to control and hold the blades in position. Now seems to be sweet.Used peter wales' guide to setting up the swashplate driver, and that was spot on first time.I recommend his site to anyone, provides a nice online manual on there.Have n't pushed it hard, but FFwd seems vice free, shall loop it once it has carbon blades on.Used woodies for initial set up,just in case I messed up
