Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Century tail boom servo mount & head button questions...

I bought the tail boom servo mount and head button for my hawk IV.

I can't get the head button on straight. Do you need to tap the hole? If you've got this upgrade how did you put it on?

Also I got the tail boom servo mount - has anyone installed this on their Hawk IV? If so how?

Thanks

If this is the head button into the plastic head it can be a bear. I did not tap it and took my time using a thin screw driver thru the hole and turning slowly with pressure on the button carefully keeping it straight. It took a few tries to get it right.

The tail boom servo mount requires removing the boom and slipping on the metal mounts and then the servo bracket. I use the KSJ model as it clamps on.

Good luck,

Marlon

That's what I was trying with the button, but I got it going at an angle a couple of times. Just figured there must be a better way Maybe not - I may just give up on that one.

The tail mount - it's the one for the hawk - it bolts right to the end of the frame where the boom comes in - no need to remove the boom. I'm wondering if anyone's got this one....

According to the instructions you have to cut the tail control rod - I'm waiting for the die so I can re-thread it. The other option was to get a carbon rod - anyone gone that route?

Thanks

Nick,

I went for the carbon rod on my helos that had a circuitous trip for the t/r pushrod. Patience on the head button. I will go on. Remember it is a left hand thread so to screw it in requires what normally is an unscrewing turn (to the left). The first time or so I got it crooked also.

Ok I'll give the head button a few more tries - yes I was aware of the left hand threading, just couldn't get it to go in straight

Can you recommend a specific c/f t/r control rod - did you use century's? Seems like $20 is kind of expensive for a stick. I see them sold in bulk for $1 a piece in a 20 pc lot - but then you need the ends?

Anyone else have experience with this boom servo mount?

I have used the generic kit from Heliproz. I have tried in the past to recycle the JB Welded in threaded ends but to no avail so I purchase the generic kit each time and cut to fit.

Would you please post a part # or item name - I'm looking at heliproz but they have a buch of things under what I'm searching for.

Also, what's the best way to cut it without cracking etc. - dremel?

Thx

Sorry Nick do not have the part number. Call and talk to Kurt, Joel or Eric, they can help you and will be glad to work with you at not breaking the bank. I ususally cut the part with a fine saw in a hobby mitre box and have not had trouble with breaking.

head button

Hi
I think it might be a reverse thread.

Yes you are right it is "backwards" - I was actually threading it correctly, it's just that it would go down so far and then would bog and I'd end up tilting it.

I probably shouldn't be doing it with the head mounted on the helicopter - I darn near broke the struts trying to screw it in

Century's head button CN2215 (for plastic rotor head)

The head button has a reverse thread, aproximately 7.5mm in diameter. What I usually do to install the head button is to use an exacto knife and cut a slight chamfer into the hole in the top. Remove the landing gear. Start threading the head button using a screwdriver inserted into the hole and crank counter-clockwise. The button will sometimes start to thread in at an angle, but continue to crank applying alot of force downwards. Use the palm of your hand on top while turning. Once the button is almost down, the flat surface above the threads will contact the top of the rotor head block and the the button will straighten out. Continue to apply alot of force on the top while the button straightens out.

In some cases, if repeated tries have enlarged the hole and the button will not tighten, remove the button and apply JB Weld or Epoxy to secure it in place. Works everytime.

Century's rear rudder servo mount CN2216

Using this mount, there is no need to change the length of the rudder pushrod.

I actually like this design better than the boom mounted style. Remove the two lower M3x25 SHCS and attach the mount to the right side of the mechanics when viewed from the back of the helicopter. Insert the two longer bolts and secure with the original M3 locknuts on the outside of the new mount. Now attach the rudder servo inserted from under the tail boom, this will position the servo horn directly below the centerline of the tail boom. Remove the ball link from the short tail pushrod (this one is different from the normal pushrod, designed for 2mm pushrods) and attach to the end of the long rudder pushrod. Once installed you may need to flip the output of the servo to alighn the ball link to the ball on the servo horn.

Last thing to do is to reposition the tail pushrod guides to get the straightest shot to the tail pitch lever ( disconnnect from the rudder servo and slide the pushrod back and forth moving the guides until the smoothest operation is attained) and glue them in place.

head button

I also had a bear of a time with the head button. I tried cutting a mild chamfer to help get it started also. This helped, but I still couldn't ever get it to go in completely straight. In the end I ended up chewing the hole up much that it wouldn't grab any more, than I went the JB Weld route. Worked like a charm, plus it was on square and didn't wobble. It has never come loose either. I would recommend to most people, cut a small chamfer and then try threading the button. If you can't get it after 3 or more tries, enlarge the hole and JB Weld it.

Same thing

Same thing here. Head button wouldn't thread on properly, ended up with a too large hole. I just used 5 Minute epoxy and it seems to be working fine.
