Safety - RC Helis are not toys > safety rules at clubs

hi guys,
i just wanted to know what type of safety rules and regulations your clubs have for operating helis. my club is begining to be very strict with the helis. there is now an increasing number of heli pilots at my club and the commitie dont seem to be very happy with us and want to get rid of us. they are introducing stupid rules like over 1 metre isnt hovering, and you must be on the runway with the plank pilots. so we go to the runway and we get blasted from the plank pilots. what rules does everyone else have??

Form your own club and find a field. You'll be much happier. Even if the plankers give you a good reception your flying won't fit in with planks, although, more and more of them are trying to fly like a heli

I'll go along with that. We found the same thing, and we've formed our own club, limited membership, more suitable flying field, rules and practices right for helis. Much more fun!

I had the odorous task of setting up some heli rules for our club, as they were going to make it a plank only club and the half dozen of us that attempt to fly heli's kicked up such a stink they relented but wanted some good workable rules which would enable us to stay.

First let me say our flying space is quite restricted, we fly alongside an active airfield to our left, and a road to our right, this gives us a width of less than 100 yards, and a length of roughly 250-300 yards. (Not much but membership is cheap )

Heli's do have their own allocated flying slots where the field is exclusivly theirs, however as long as the plankers don't mind we can fly during plank time as long as nobody else is flying.

1, No heli shall fly at the same time as fixed wing or c/l.
2, Only one heli shall be flown at any one time.
3, Only those recognised by the club committee are allowed to give instruction to novice heli pilots.

Thats about it really
The reasoning behind them is as follows....

1 When flying a plank it is very distracting and un-nerving to have a heli buzzing away less than 20 yards from you, especially as you cant keep an eye on it due to watching your own plane. As someone who flys both I can see the sense in this one.

2 If there are more than one heli flying, given the size of our field, and one heli went haywire, as soon as that person alerted all others to a potential problem, it would be human nature for us to look to see what the problem was and more to the point, make sure it wasn't heading towards us! If another person was flying at the same time, by the time they had looked to the problem heli, then back to their own, it could mean two heli's going in the wrong place, not a good move. Besides there is nothing better than sitting back having a good laugh at somebody elses flying.

3 We dont have any officially certified heli instructors, so the decision was made to restrict instructing to those who had at least a year on flying heli's. The reason for this was purely because of the way the world is going with regard to liability issues and the nature of the world to try and blame somebody for every accident that happened. We could then have been seen to have made the sport as safe as we could.

Oh and one I'd forgotten, because its second nature, you never fly alone!!(At least not at the club field )

gravity REALLY sucks

I think Tom DeWinter hit the nail on the head.

I'm a member of a club that's mainly planks and I rarly fly there. It's just convenient as it's almost on my door step.

We, myself and three others, have our own heli field and that works best! We've set a flight line distance from the pits and we normally only fly one up at a time. That's about it other than the fact BMFA insurance is MANDATORY for MY protection...oh and everyone elses

I am one of the lucky ones. I belong to a club that is mostly planks, which I fly as well, but they welcome all pilots of all models. One advantage we have is that we are a small club and there doesn't seem to be any problem flying heli's there. In fact they all stop flying to watch, which I would just as soon have happen I case something goes wrong. I even got another member involed with heli's and am working on another one. We don't have any special rules in writing for flying them, but I agree that for safety we don't fly planes and heli's at the same time. Chuck

Really, it makes no difference if you're flying a heli in the middle of the flying field or hovering your fun fly plank there. I fly at a field where I am one of only two chopper pilots out of about 80 members. If a guy is flying his 3D fixed wing at show center, he and the other pilots have to look out for each other. Unless you're all flying circuits it dosen't matter if you're flying a heli or a plank.

I try to stay down if I know the other pilot(s) will be flying low or if the other guy is going to be doing some 3D. Also when I'm up if someone else goes up they stay up high. We don't have any problems coexisting. Part of the reason is probably the fact that everyone in the club knows me and knows that I've been a member for the last 20 years. If I had just joined the club and started flying helicopters, they might feel differently.

My old club adopted a rule for Helli's had the runway on the hour
and on the half hour for one flight
worked OK with just a few helicopters
but as said above common sense usually prevailed and
the pilots worked it out
on a busy weekend it was a problem
